diabetics and IHM

hi guys,

can someone help me, why shouldnt i give a treatment to a person who suffers from diabetics? if they are on medication and controlled.

Hi Farideh

I think this depends on what you were taught, as different therapists seem to have been taught different contraindications in a range of different therapies. I do not refuse to treat diabetic people, but Ialways ask if they are inmy consultations,and I ask them to tell me at onceif they are getting dizzy or feeling funny during the treatment. I don't give a firm treatment.

With people with epilepsy I miss out quick movements on the head eg hacking.

I'm doing IHM course (VTCT) now and we were also told that as long as the diabetes is controlled it is not a problem to give a treatment. We were also told to tell the client to advise GP that they are having treatment so that blood sugar can be monitored carefully.

I agree with Siobhan that you ask the client for immediate feedback if he/she is not feeling well and not to give to deep a treatment.

A little PS here - when I was training in reflexology they advised us to have sweet biscuits available in case a diabetic client had a hypoglycaemic episode. Jobelle makes a very good point about monitoring blood sugar levels and informing the GP. I don't know about IHM, but certainly with reflexology I have heard reports about blood sugar levels apparently being influenced by treatments.

Hi all,

Thanx for all the replies, I was tought that I can give treatment to diabetics as long as its controlled, but I was told by fellow therapist that I shouldnt even thought its controlled, I need to put my mind at rest as I had couple of treatments to do.

Glad to say everything went fine, after the treatment I ask them if they wereok,and not feeling dizzy,orfaint. they said they are just fineIcall them couple hours later they were still ok, and were ok the next day.

Frankly, I really learnt alot frm u guys here in this forumn.. I learnt to take more care n hav learnt some knowledge tt i couldnt / didnt learnt frm the text.. such as
