Directions to D'Pelufo

I will be visiting San Jose in June, and want to check out D'Pelufo. Both locations are far enough away from "Monger Central" that they do not appear on maps. My question is: can I tell a typical SJ taxi driver, "take me to D'Pelufo in San Pedro," and reasonably expect to get there?

I would appreciate any advice, including detailed directions. The club's (very stylish) website provides no clues.

My plan is to stay downtown, meaning the San Pedro club is closer than the one in Alejuela. Are the two clubs equivalent, or would I be missing out by opting for the shorter taxi ride?

Think your chances with "typical SJ taxi driver" would be hit or miss.

While it will be more expense a taxista at either the DR or the KL will know the place without a problem.

This question has come up before and you'd think with all the reviews and posts done on the place somebody would have answered it. The closest I've seen is that it is so many meters away from some landmark I've never heard of (the Farol?). And don't tell me just to have some cabbie outside the DR drive me there. I'd like to add it to my map, so you'd think some member that knows his way around SJ would take note of where he's going when being driven there in a cab (and hopefully snaps a pic for my pop-up when he gets there) and then would share his new found knowledge with the rest of us. C'mon guys, I'm going through some effort to put this all together, the least someone could do would be to help a little with the field research. BTW, I'm still waiting on most of the missing pics that I listed some time ago (thanks go out to the 2-3 guys that have pitched in with some pics or data)

Guilty as charged.

Been there 4 or 5 times, and never once noticed the address. And everytime it's a hassle finding a knowledgeable taxi driver. Sorry.

I can tell you it is on the mainest of main streets going that way. You pass several of the restaurants/nightclubs, then it is on the left. I know that's useless information, but perhaps if it jogs somebody's memory...

500 al sur de la calle amargula.

Its on the main street going from mall san pedro towards curridabat, a low building with no noticeable sign in front ,gravel driveway and the entrance is in the back. Its on your left if heading from mall san pedro, all taxi drivers know calle amargula its the best bar and danceclub area in SJ.

Just to add...

From the front, the building ALWAYS looks closed -- for good. I was amazed when we pulled around back and found it open a couple of weeks ago.

If I remember correctly there is a sign.

It's the typical commercial "Imperial" cervaza sign with D'Peluo's written in black along the top. It's on a pole next to the building.

The building itself is just an adobe house so don't expect something that looks like a strip club.

Most taxis have radios so if the driver doesn't know where it is he can always call someone for directions.

I appreciate the detailed descriptions which should certainly help others locate the place, however they still lack the one thing I need to place it on my map - a street address. The main street that runs between the Gulch and the Mall is Avenida Central. Okay, that's half of what I need. How about the numbered cross calle. Calle Argula may be known to cabbies but it is not to most of us.

Heading towards the mall one normally takes Avenida 2 which sort of splits and becomes one way before it merges with Ave Central around Calle 29. This is also where the RR tracks cross over Ave C. Heading back from the mall, one normally continues straight on Ave C which becomes one way at that same point where Ave 2 feeds into it. Which side of that landmark is D'Pelufo on?

How about other landmark buildings? Some of the commonly used ones along A Central coming from the Mall are the Subaru Dealership (Calle 41 or approx. where the side roads that parallel Ave. Cent come to an end), Bagelman's (Calle 33), the KFC or the RR crossing (already mentioned at Calle 29) and the National Museum (Calle15/17). The closest thing I can think of as a nightlife district in that area would be at Calle 23 north of Ave. Central where you have Cine Magli and El Cuartel Bar.

With all those, one shouldn't have to count more than 2-4 blocks from any landmark to provide an exact location. With everyone thats been there I can't believe no one knows where they went particularly if its on a major thoroughfare like Ave. Central. I've looked out the window of my cab or bus many times and even walked the entire length of it during the day once. If I'd been there at night I know I'd be able to spot where I'd been.
