Disabling start up programs/uninstalling in Vista? Newbie help!?

Hi there! When I disable a start up program, does it remove the program for good/temporarily/or from start up only? (

Also, how do I know which programs to disable (apart form the obvious ones i.e. itunes, msn etc). There seems to be a lot of junk in there? Similarly, how do I know which programs are safe to uninstall?

When you disable a program from start up that's all it does. Stops it from starting when the computer is turned on. When you have less programs starting on startup the quicker start up will be. Normally under msconfig in the start up tab is all the programs you've installed that as you've installed it checked the option "start on start up" or "start when windows starts". Therefore there shouldn't be any startup programs that aren't save. I've had a look at mine and nothing shows up there that seems related to the operation of the OS. It's when you choose to stop services from starting you want to be careful and even then theres a box in msconfig that let's you hide all microsoft services but things like your graphic card drivers load this way so still need to be careful. If you want to turn of services go to run and type "services.msc". Simply right click a service choose properties or options and then look for the option that lets you manually start the service. This also increases start up time.

incomplete question.
when u disable a program function to run in startup.that means it doesnt run after boot.but could be run manually.u know which program to uninstall when u know it.find out what it does if u dont want it uninstall it.
i am not pretty sure i answered that right.

When you disable a start up program, it only prevents the program from running when you start up the computer. It doesn't remove the program itself.

About the programs you want to disable/uninstall, you might wanna go to control panel -> Add or remove programs and there would be a list of programs to choose that you want to uninstall.
