Distance Learning Courses: Advice needed>>

[Mr Sheepy is back again]

I wonder if someone would be so kind as to offer an opinion on this method of learning reflexology?

It is ALL theory based but they say after completion a two day practical is available. Would this be sufficient to work privately as a reflexologist? Would it be possible to get insurance?

I would expect, though I cannot be sure, that the major insurance companies who have been involved in the complementary medicine field for years e.g. Balens, would be unlikely to insure you if you did this course. It would be best to contact them directly to be sure. As a reflexologist for 15 years I do not see how you can learn a hands on therapy from a distance learning course, even with a 2 day practical at the end of the course. My course involved hands on practice every day, working on a variety of different people to get as wide a practical experience as possible before going on to treat paying clients.

stonebridge and BSY have been discussed at length , please use search box both are offering unrecognised courses with little potential for employment, you would learn more by buying a text book and reading through it.

Hi Drakey - I would be inclined to recommend that you don't waste your money - find a local further education college and do a part-time course through them - most of them offer reflexology. Two days practical experience is not (IMHO) sufficient to then be let loose on the general public.

I agree with Jabba, Biggaz & Elliot. When I did my reflexology, it was hands on for most of the course. Lots of theory as well, then there were 36 case studies to do. Two days practical is definitely not enough.

My cousre Is 10 months long ( i am studying st the British School of Reflexology) and not including the practice sessions we need to do 85 treatments for our case studies (by the time i have qualify i will probabaly have done nealy 200 treatments in total) I takes a good deal of time to get the pressures and tecniques right , If you can possibly afford it try and find a IFR, AOR or even itec etc course near by , it will prepare you so much better for practice.

I'd say don't bother. Even an ITEC course will cost you less than this and it will be worth more to you in the end. After all, my AoR course consisted of 11 full weekends and an exam over the course of a year, and I'd done two full days of hands on practical by the end of the second weekend.

If time is an issue, have a look at Floodlight, which will give you information about evening classes in your area. You might find a reflexology evening class at your local college.

You can't possibly become a genuine reflexologist with a distance learning course. You need regular hands-on practice with a tutor supervising you as well doing the theory, and you need to do case studies too. You also need to be doing practice hands-on treatments for about a year before you'll be ready for paying clients
If you're not able to do a full time course, then as has already been suggested, check your local college for a part time evening course with a recognised practitioner qualification at the end of it.
