DJing in Patong

I've a question. I DJ here in San Francisco on occasion at a few bars and clubs, and I always thought it would be fun to spin a night or two at one of the clubs there. I was there for my first time last December, and will be returning in November, so I'd like to explore this.
1) Do they let Farangs play at some of these places, or is it almost all locals?
2) Who should I talk to about this? I spin House, breaks, almost anything under the sun.
3) What kind of equipment can I expect? Do they use turntables or CD Mixers, or both? Or could I bring my laptop and use Tractor or some other like system?
4) Also, do BG's find DJ's more desirable than the average guy? heehee

Without a work permit it would be very unlikely any of the discos would allow it.

You will still be doing a work that a thai can do, so you still need a work permit...

Next time I go to LOS, I'm gonna bring sum downtempo-type CDs. It didn't occur to me last time, but most bars are willing to play a few songs off any CD before realizing that it's not the carrot vitamin song and switching it off. I found a few bars playing good ol drumnbass mix CDs that the UK kids brought with em.

So you could at least bring some mixes, but I understand that doesn't lend itself to the groupie factor quite as well. :ytounge:

The old Dragon disco used to let good DJ's spin.. Had turntables (not technics) and a CD dj setup.. Have seen a guy use a MP3 hard disc solution (DJFX IIRC) but that must have been his own and prior permission..

Dragon is no longer a disco and I dont know how friendly any of the other places may be to this..

Always felt that the UK sound would go down well(bassline house,breaks,garage....)in patong, the music wouldnt be appreciated to its full extent though,but you give me the chance anywhere,put some decks in front of me and i'll have a bash, but its getting into the clubs is the problem.its like back home,if u put on club nights and u have resident dj's and someone turns up wanting a mix,its very unlikely u gonna give them a go,yeah you'll take there demo and have a listen.maybe the smaller nights and clubs is the way forward.
Knock up loads of demo's and get them out.
i feel the music scene is better on the east,samui,koh phangan.a lot more bigger names and the music is alot better(more underground),possibly more opurtunity.
Ive been mixing for 8+years alongside some big names,puting on nights in and around london,untold amounts of pirate radio and have recentely landed myself a job on a new S.E england radio station,kanefm(.com)which has already had its trial broadcast last summer,(new site coming soon)which is planned to launch at the end of the year(good timing for me),and to be fair i havent tried here in LOS,i have burnt a very small majority of my vinyl(enough to get by) to CD,for traveling purposes,but when i was in mexico,i put out quite a few demo's to clubs and bars,and yeah i did get to play in a couple of bars but none of the bigger clubs,im just trying to say its a hard scene to get in to because there is a lot of people doing the same thing.
i hope to mix out here in LOS,i just get of my lazy **** and speak to the right people,because im affraid to say ,its not what u know in this game,its who.

the main aim of the dj should be to keep the girls happy,,cos if they do this the guys stay,,,and spend money,,thats the way it is,,every club ive worked i adopted this policy,,never fails,,!hope to be back in patong next year,,with my cds,,one way ticket!!

you are right,t heres more a preference for that type of music in samui. patong is just not that sophisticated(if you want to call it that) when it comes to music.

The triick is, I can go to certain bars here in SF and hear an international cheesy mix of music. Lots of people dance there.

Or I can go to a hip hop club and hear the lastest shit. Lots of people dance there. Hip Hop is king here. Sadly, but as long as its 120 BPM Im happy, Hip hop or no.

Or I can play house or New Breaks. Hopefully people will dance.

For me DJing , what is the most popular shit? Can I pick stuff from a thai radio station and be good to go? Or an Oakland station?

If Iwere to pick a Thai song and mix it on my machine with house or breaks would it go over well? ****, I dont even listen to thai radio. But would the girls go nuts?

only really girls that are into that scene. you will realize, these girls are like little girls. they like their silly music, their thai music thats not mixed and hip hop and dance that they are use to

Most of the girls I know will "put up with" western music , a couple of songs will catch their attention and get them laughing but when the Thai music comes on they like to sing along. I guess re-mixes and hip-hop might work in a disco but I don't think it would be long before they would be asking for the "normal" music back on. :cheergal: :happyi: :cheergal:
