Hi y'all!

I got my license in 2000 but didn't really practice. I recently got motivated and dicided to get back to doing more massages. I think I want to do outcalls mainly for people who live in the same community I live in.

Here is my question - Should I get an liability insurance before I start charging my clients? Is it necessary for therapists who do outcalls?

Yes, it is very important to get insurance prior to working on anyone. My rule of thumb is always CYA!

I'm with Pandoras_Gift, definitely CYA by getting professional liability insurance.

Also I believe the laws are changing for massage therapists in Texas...

As long as Aya keep her registration (now license) current, she was "grandfathered" in without any action needed on her part. The recent change was for changing initial education from 300 hours to 500 hours. The law also allows for greater law enforcement to aid in elimating those that work to damage our profession.

I agree about the CYA in personal libility insurance - get it before you start...

Yes.

Although in our profession it is rare to be sued, you don't want to get caught unprotected.

I would recommend it. It may even be required now in some states.

It is really cheap and worth while.

It isn't that you can hurt people but people can have unreasonable expectations. I have had a few friends who had claims made against them for the most ridiculous things.

I get mine through ABMP but got it through IMA for the longest time as it was cheaper there.

There is also a policy in massage magazine but I heard that it doesn't cover everything but it would be worth looking into.

If you could be sued, insurance is very important. I would think accepting donations would put you on the edge. I guess it depends on your comfort level. I would not do it without insurance. We all would love to think *our* clients wouldn't sue us.....and truthfully, most massage and reflexology clients won't. Proving real damage, and then proving we caused it, wouldn't be an easy case for them to win. But being sued is expensive regardless, and juries and judges do go on huge stupid streaks and hand millions of somebody else's money to those who file frivolous suits.
