Do you need XBox Live GOLD to use chits to buy arcade games?

It's not clear to me from the XBox website whether or not you need a GOLD subscription to use their point system to buy arcade games from the marketplace. It says with a silver subscription you can buy arcade games with a CC. My interest here is, I am thinking about buying an XBox 360, but not the gold subscription. But I still want to use the points so I am not putting tons of transactions on my credit card.

You can buy things with points using only Xbox Live Silver, you don't need Gold. Gold is only needed if you want to get certain 'hot' demos or videos early, since those things sometimes get released to Gold members for about a week before being allowed to Silver members.

Yes, you can buy arcade games with a Silver membership. You'll still need to use the "points" to buy them, though (and, of course, you'll also need a broadband connection).

You have to use your credit card to buy the points. The good news for you is that you can buy a chunk of points ... and then every time you buy a game, the points will be deducted -- so you can limit the transactions on your credit card.

Each time you decide to add a new game, it is then download it right to your Xbox so you can play it whenever you want. No need to enter your credit card info each time.

You may use points with a Silver Subscription. Before I got gold, I bought an arcade game with points.

In fact, the only way to buy games is to buy points (with a CC or otherwise), and then spend the points. Enjoy.

you can but then u won;t be able to get the deal of the week and also you use your credit card to buy the microsoft points.
Also you can go to a store and buy microsoft points.

With a gold membership, you'll get the ability to play online with other people, receive exclusive content, and generally have a more active role in communicating with other members of the Live Community. With a silver one, you can track achievements and use the marketplace (so yes, you can get classic games with a silver membership).
