Do you think the massages on the back won’t hurt after two back surgeries?

My husband had his second back surgeries on February 11th of 2009. Then he got another shoulder surgery December 11th of 2009. Now he’s going to Physical therapy for his shoulder and his back starting to hurt because of those exercise for his shoulder. Now his physical therapist massages his back in order for him to feel better. But it does no seem to work the massages. In fact he has more back pain now than before. Do you think all these massaging on his back will or won’t affect his back surgery?

The massage, itself, should have no detrimental effects on the surgery. If he's having progressive back pain again, he probably really needs to be doing some more active therapy for his back (as opposed to just massages) in addition to his shoulder. If his current therapist is not a spine specialist, it may be worth it for another therapist in the clinic to take a look at him.

Only your husband knows the answer to that question. I know for myself, I have had 3 back surgeries, and I could not tolerate a massage by most people's standard. The purpose of a massage is to loosen up the muscles and increase blood flow and the pressure used it just too much. I can't even lay on my stomach so there is no way to even begin. Your husband just needs to tell the therapist that he has noticed that his back pain is increasing because of the therapy. It is a problem that the therapist will have to address.
