My horse had a beautiful long mane that he ruined from eating grass through the fence so I chopped it off and now he has a mohawk. Since then I have noticed that when im asking him to go in frame he is giving me a false collection. He is not giving at the poll at all. So since I've noticed that I have been doing carrot stretches with him before and after I ride. With that I figured out that he doesnt give to poll pressure at all. One of the stretches is the "poll twist" you ask the horse to lower and extend the neck and put your hand behind the ears to stabalize him and that's where I discovered he fights/resists the pressure instead of lowering his head when I put pressure on his poll he throws his head up and fights it, Ive been working with him trying to get him to give to the pressure but so far Im not getting anywhere. I have also tried massaging the poll area as well. Im not sure if it's just a training issue that I need to resolve or if he needs a good massage or if I need to have him adjusted. I don't want to get the wrong person out and spend all the money to not have to problem fixed. I had a chiro out in Feb, they said he didn't need an adjustment then (he was having hind end issues then, that have been resolved) they did do a small adjustment to the poll but that was it. Any suggestions on who to have come out or how I can soften him up in the poll?
Both my western and english saddles fit him correctly, and he had his teeth done less then a year ago and the dentist said he had great teeth. I am not thinking suspensory in the front legs is likely considering I have never had a front end lameness issue with him and he is a barrel horse so he is in heavy work
