Donating Gift Certificates

Please help settle a little confusion.....Can you deduct gift certificates that you donate to a charity event for massage therapy and write it off on your taxes? How do you handle this situation? Thanks for your input!,Kimber

I don't know... hmmmm.Do you have an accountant?They would know.Sorry, I can't be more help. :-/But this would be a good piece of info to know about.  I never even thought about that before.

Thanks for your reply Texas-Gal,Yes we have an accountant and we are getting conflicting answers.Seems everyone has a different way of looking at this situation. Several of our MT friends have asked their accountants and they said that they could and ours said no.......Sooo I was hoping someone on this board might know the answer!  Anyone out there a MT and an accountant? LOL Or maybe where I could look up this tax law on the internet?Thanks for the help,Kimber

Aralia,Yes, you are correct.  After I double checked with my accountant, I noticed you had posted exactly what he had stated to me.  In fact, it was almost word for word.It seems that donating gift certificates is better for karma than for tax deductions.   ;D

If you are in the Cleveland area, and WVIZ still holds their annual auction (I think its done in May?) you actually get a free commercial donating gift certificates for table...even better! for chair massage. Donating a session of chair massage for a company's employees will affect a greater number of possible client contacts, or be the possible door open for a return weekly, or biweekly! Better yet, donate chair to the people doing the Auction! Corporations in Cleveland sponsor one day each. Besides the station folk, it might lead to a great corporate gig.
