D'Pelufos - what a fuckin' joke!

I have a rant to share about D'Pelufos (San Pedro location) and would not recommend the place to anyone.

I and three other gringos (all of us live here though and know spanish well enough) ventured there the other night. I had been once before, about three years ago and didn't find it that great but figured why not give it another chance.

While one of our friends was outside on the phone, the other three of us (myself, another male and one female) walk in, to find it quite expensive at 5000 colones entrance with only 2 drinks, but pay and enter. We immediately get a ton of dirty looks from the crowd of ticos in there.

We order our drink and are told we cannot stand at the bar. We reply we are simply ordering our drink there then we'll go sit down.

We have to sit way in the back, in what looks like a dungeon, our only view the backs of ticos standing in front of us. We agree to just have our drink and then try someplace else.

While talking to each other, the security guy comes to the back and tells us "Shhhhhhhh!" This with loud music going on and us not talking loud (we were obviously not drunk either only on our first drink). We ignore him and keep talking amongst ourselves to get another 'Shhhhhh' and dirty looks. All this while the music is blaring.

Well that was enough, we walked out only to be followed by the security guy. We stood in the parking lot waiting for our friend who was still on his cell, and see the security guy go to his car and come back with a police night stick. He stays in front of the door and stares and points at us while talking to the other doormen (apparently about us we assume).

We decided to just grab our friend and leave, to go find a taxi. Good thing the are pretty much on the main road.

Had we been drunk, we probably may have gotten into a fight which probably would have been a bad idea under the circumstances.

Just my warning to others, it seems to be an ultra unfriendly club to gringos.

I have been to d'pelufo's exactly once (and had a great time). As I recall, the lesbian show at D'pelufo's is preceded by an announcement to be quiet. The group I went with during a SBT witnessed this first-hand. We were sitting next to the stage, and the announcer told the audience several times, "shhhh-please be quiet for the lesbian show." We didn't take him seriously at first, but he persisted. Finally, after all was silent, the lesbian show began. Why they insist on the reverence for a lesbian show is beyond me. Anyway, Varius, perhaps you guys were talking during the show. That's the only reason I can think of why they were so insistent.

They take their lesbian show very, very seriously? More seriously than we had previously thought? :

Varius, I have heard reports of an undercurrent of anti-gringoism at de'Palufos. Never to this extent, however. Not that the night stick behaviour can be excused, but this incident shows the importance of being attuned to our presence in a foreign country, and trying to observe the customs and practices of our hosts.

I think it's quite possible that the Ticos perhaps feel a bit more "posessive" about this place than some of the other venues, and may feel that we're encroaching a bit on their turf. Even so, in something like six visits now, the only time I've left prematurely is when we got there late one time and the place was packed to the rafters. If you arrive by 10pm or so, you can get a table in front, so this isn't an issue.

And I also primarily just go for the show and the tease - not for any backroom stuff. You can get that elsewhere cheaper. But the one-minute $1,000 colones lap dances are great - and something I really wish some of the other clubs would try. And the overall talent level blows away the other clubs.

Bottom line - it's a unique place with its own particular atmosphere, but it's not for everyone. I've never been mistreated in any way by the staff - even when bringing in more than ten gringos at a time on a tour - and I will go back.

As a strip club it has the best looking girls period .the part that makes me laugh is howw they want complete slience for the show.Like it has been said this is not for everybody.I would tell any body who has a problem to go to Eric (he is the manager and a great guy).They have always treated me like a king here.
