Just to clarify there are two apparent questions in the post. The question in the body of the post about access to bars has been answered: No customer under 20 years of age can enter a bar club or disco, however farangs rarely get ID checked unless they cause trouble. The title, however asks about drinking age - there is no minimum age for buying or consuming alcohol in Thailand, so you can drink and be drunk, so long as you don't cause trouble.

When it is said that young farangs are not usually ID checked, I wonder if the volunteer police we are seeing more of these days in resorts, having a more accustomed eye for 'ageing' farangs, might start challenging youngsters?

I take a very different view on this, coming from the owners side. When you have underaged drinkers on the premises, and there is a check done, although highly unlikely, it is the bar and manager/owner on site at the time that takes the brunt of the law, and not the customer.

Its the same as back home, would you enter licensed premises knowing that you where underaged, and what consequences would you expect back home if caught.

I know it can be a pain for the Bar owners if under age drinkers get caught on the premises. Same law in the UK, the licensee gets it in the neck usually. Not unknown for the federales to send an underage buyer into a bar to see if ID is actually checked or can get served or not.

Is there any other way this lad Phr33k can legally have a drink? Restaurants, at the beach etc or do the same rules apply there Steve?

In my experience of friends who have brought their teenager sons out for a holiday I strongly recommend that you bring a spare pair of "bollox" as most girls love to meet a brand new boy.One of my friends who is an Old Asia Hand brought his 17 year son out from UK and managed to get the offsping laid as a virgin for weeks. As we all know the age checking and ridiculous piss testing is normally only seen in Bangkok's finer establishments, although piss testing has been seen in Patong, recently but only for staff. If your under age, but look the part and pass of as over 20, and more importantly act it, then just drink in the bar beers and open air establishments, but stay out of the indoor bars, especially agogo's.

If there does happen to be an age check done, the bar will receive a 30 day closure order.

Steve is a recently ex bar and gogo owner.. A 30 day clossure order for a bar is a nightmare.. From his position he is saying its not welcome, from yours its a different perspective..

I think Steve explained it quite well Phr, yes, you would be probably told to leave the premises while the owner was issued with a notice to close down for 30 days. That is his revenue and the livelyhood of everyone concerned with the bar (Owner, Cleaners, BG's, the suppliers) who would suffer while you walk down the road on your merry way.

Good advice given by other BM's with regard to yes!! Have a drink, but in moderation, if you are not used to your drink and end up bringing attention to yourself then expect the finger to be pointed. I think the Bar owners who want to protect thier income wouldn't serve you anyway.
