Drinking age?

Hey guys! I'm a 19 year old Aussie who's planning on visiting Phuket in December with a couple of girlfriends. I was just wondering what the drinking age is there? I've had conflicting answers. Some have said 18, others 20, some 21, some people have even said there IS no legal drinking age and bars decide it themselves.

Can I please have a straight answer?

Also, if the drinking age does happen to be 20/21... how lax are the bars when it comes to checking ID?

You wont have any problems in beer bars, probably not at clubs either (20 y.o. enforced for thai girls at clubs).

Why do you specify for thai girls, though? What about foreign girls? Or guys? Is there no set drinking age or something??

I have another question (sorry!!!) is the nightlife there mainly bars, strip clubs and go-go bars? Or are there clubs that play electro/dance music and have DJs etc?

I can't remember off the top of my head because we haven't booked flights yet. But it's looking to be early December, I think at some point beteen the 1st and the 20th

Nightlife there is mainly bars of all kinds (not just girly bars) but plenty of good clubs too, you are spoilt for choice on all fronts. No strip bars though, I don’t think so anyway.

I recommend tiger and safari. Banana is a bit more expensive but also good

plenty of good choice for clubs with music as the emphasis....

Sounds, Seduction + Lime all in Patong...plus there's Stereo Lab out on Surin Beach if you want a beach front vibe with real international DJ's

then there's Holywood, Tiger + Baya which have reasonable mainstream dance music with loads of Thai gals looking for a bit of fun combined with business

Safari is for very late nights (after 3-4am start)...and Banana is the domain of rich Arabs

I got ID'd and turned away from Q bar in BKK when i was 19 so they do sometimes check...but saying that never had any issues with regualr beer bars in my younger days

I was IDed at Tiger years ago one night. As they thought I was under age at the time (I was 22 or 23), but they let me in even though I wasn't carrying any ID on me.



The only problems I would think you will have is if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and the police are there. Be it a incident or for a random drugs testing, although that is very unlikely and even less likely they would ask the Farangs!

Tourists get away with a lot more than Thais, the few times we had drug tests and I.D. checks it was only for the Thais, they didnt bother the tourists/farangs. This is for Phuket, Bangkok may be a different matter tho.
