After more than 20 years in the corporate world, Junius Brown was looking for a career change. With that goal in mind, he considered something that had become a valued part of his own life: Massages.
“I had my first massage about a year and a half ago and I became addicted. I couldn’t believe I went all those years without having them,” said Brown, who has lived in Ridgefield with his wife, Hilary (the band director at East Ridge Middle School), and their children since 2000. “In terms of work, I wanted to do something in Ridgefield and have it feel more valuable than sitting in on a conference call.”
Elements Massage opened this summer in Ridgefield at 86 Danbury Road.
The intersection of that career refocus and newfound passion is now at 86 Danbury Road, where Brown opened an Elements Massage franchise location on July 23. Founded by a former massage therapist who believed the industry had become too removed from its clients’ needs, Elements Massage now has more than 230 locations, all independently owned.
“What Elements says about putting the client first was a match for what I think about how a business should be run,” said Brown. “With Elements, the idea is to provide a quality massage that is affordable and available and focused on therapy and healing. The therapist listens to the client and designs a personalized massage.”
In less than two months, Elements Massage Ridgefield looks to have found a niche: Approximately 640 sessions have been given, and more than 90 people have signed up for Elements’ trademarked Wellness Program, which offers discounted rates to members on a month-to-month basis.
“I’m fortunate to have found nine great Licensed Massage Therapists,” said Brown. “They love what they do, and that makes all the difference.”
Seven days a week (from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily), Ridgefield Elements Massage offers deep-tissue and Swedish massages at either 60, 90 or 120 minutes per session. Aromatherapy and/or hot stones can be added to massages, and pre-natal and couples massages are also available. Special introductory rates are offered for massages at all three time levels, and those under 18 can have sessions with parental approval.
Brown said the interaction between client and therapist is essential at Elements Massage Ridgefield. “We want clients to feel comfortable and tell their therapist if there is something they want to focus on,” said Brown. “You may be a golfer who has some shoulder pain, or a person who works on a computer all day and has some back pain. Our therapists also give a recommendation after each session.”
While some people approach massages as a once-in-awhile indulgence, the Elements Massage model is based on more frequent sessions, with massages acting as part of a person’s overall health and wellness program.
“Massages bridge the mental and physical parts of a healthy lifestyle,” said Brown. “They are great for de-stressing, but they are even more beneficial as a source of therapeutic healing.”
As for his own career reboot, Brown has already noticed the positives.
“I can see when people leave after having their massages that their day just got a little better,” said Brown. “For me, there’s more value in that than looking over a spreadsheet.”
