A combination of wanting to be closer to home as well as provide osteopathy therapy to “underserved” New Hamburg area motivated Lisa and Ben Woods to open up their own clinic.
Elysis, a registered massage therapy and manual osteopathy clinic, officially opened at the plaza at Unit 9 at 338 Waterloo St. in New Hamburg on Oct. 1.
After 13 years of owning Elysis in Waterloo (an award-winning clinic), Ben and Lisa, parents of an 11-year-old and a nine-year-old, decided it was time to expand their clinic and be closer to their home in Wellesley at the same time.
“We have been eagerly looking for an opportunity to open a location close to home because we have recognized that this area is largely underserved when it comes to manual osteopathy,” said Ben, a graduate of the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy. Lisa is a graduate of the same program while the couple have also had education at the Canadian College of Osteopathy.
Ben explained that osteopathy isn’t a regulated profession and many therapists complete online education before embarking it. He believes that what sets Elysis apart is the education that their
As defined by the Canadian College of Osteopathy, osteopathy is a “natural medicine which aims to restore function in the body by treating the causes of pain and imbalance.”
“(It) gets to some of the problems other therapies kind of miss,” said Lisa, who treats newborn babies as well.
Doctor’s referrals aren’t required for an appointment, and most of them are booked by word of mouth, Ben said.
“The most common thing is people coming in for back pain and for digestive concerns, those are two pretty big ones that we see,” said Ben. “And it’s usually chronic things that people have struggled to treat successfully in the past.”:
