An Enderby massage therapist will have his registration with the College of Massage Therapy of British Columbia (CMTBC), cancelled due to professional misconduct.
Dennis Desrochers was issued eight citations for a discipline hearing, to be combined into one submission. Rather than face that formal process, Desrochers proposed to enter into a consent order with the college’s inquiry committee.
Desrochers agreed to having his registration cancelled effective June 15; not being able to apply to re-register for a period of five years; and pay a portion of the investigation costs to the college.
“The inquiry committee considered Mr. Desrochers’ admitted conduct to be serious,” says a statement on the college’s website.
“The inquiry committee is satisfied that the consent order in this matter … will protect patient safety through cancellation of Mr. Desrochers’ registration, meaning that Mr. Desrochers will no longer be authorized to practice as a registered massage therapist in B.C.”
Between May 2011 and August 2018, Desrochers admitted to misconduct involving seven patients, six of whom filed multiple complaints.
Among them were undraping a patient to her waist, exposing her breasts without informing the patient in advance of disrobing and draping options; engaging in unprofessional communication with the patient relating to her bra and breast size; and massaging a patient’s chest and breasts without ensuring that the patient was fully informed regarding treatment.
The committee noted that Desrochers will not have an automatic right to registration after five years. His application will be reviewed by the committee.
