My heart aches for the suffering this young woman has endured from a young age but this is more about emotional and mental illness than the sex trade . The trauma of being raped at a young age has devastating effects on a person . The subsequent kidnapping and rapes have reduced her to someone who lives in constant fear . Very sad.

The SUN will sell more papers , with ads for sex , by sensationalizing the sex trade tie in but her problems started long before she met the scumbag pimp . The real story and it is covered in the article is that we spend billions on social services and it is so difficult to find help unless you are certifiably insane and/or deemed dangerous . If you don't have the strength to be your own advocate and there is no "champion" in your life you are hard pressed to get the proper help .

Depends what you think of as main stream. There are some agencies that you might consider main stream that have very similar practices.

Let's not kid ourselves, the pimps of the world are always finding ways to look more legitimate to the outside world.

It is a very sad story. One that is probably shared, in some manner, by more SPs than we know.

I can't speak for others' experiences, but I've known Wendy Leaver for over a year, through my work with SPOC, and she's always been very helpful. Last month, she helped us locate a Toronto-based escort who went missing in the Middle East back in April (we're pretty sure she was detained on prostitution-related offences). Luckily, the effort to bring her home was already under way, but if it wasn't, Wendy Leaver would have helped us go through diplomatic channels to kick-start the process.

Still, she's only one person, with a huge mandate and minimal resources; I'm hoping for the day when an abused sex worker can file a report with any cop, and still be taken seriously. Until then, stories like this will continue to be all too common. :frown:

As for reporting crimes and being taken seriously, there was a mandate written to ALL toronto police that an escort was to be treated no differently than any other citizen when reporting crimes. There was an article posted by an sp at "the other board" on this. I don't know how well it is being accepted, but the mandate is there.

As for the original story, it is sickening to read about. Thankfully there are reputable agencies out there who don't use and abuse the ladies and do protect them. Thank god they caught the asshole who kidnapped her. I hope they throw the book at him and he doesn't see the light of day......
