Finding out Business Climate

Hi all, (hope this is in the right section...but I trust the MODs to move it if it isn't. :mrgreen: )

I'm still in school and will be moving down south (from CT to SC--Greenville Area) once my schooling is done. That will be around this time next year. :shock: I know that time will be here before I know it so I'm getting my POA (plan of action) together now. Here's the deal, is there a way to find out the business climate for massage therapists in that area? I am more into Therapeutic Massage (NMT, MFR, Clinical Sports Massage, AIS and Orthopedic Massage). I also enjoy Pregnancy Massage. I've done some preliminary searches (google and craig's list) to see what types of jobs could possibly be out there and all I seem to find are Day Spa type of arrangements and Massage Envy postings. I have 0 interest in those two areas (especially ME).

Possibilities:
*I do know the owners of a huge gym in Greenville that opened not too long ago. They don't have MTs right now but I thought about the possibility of broaching the subject with them in the hope that I would be able to come on board once I move down there.

*Another option would be to consider the Atlanta Metro Area (GA) where I lived for almost two years and make the 2-2.5hr trek back and forth a few times per week. I know Atlanta's Therapeutic Massage "arena" has more opportunities.

(oh and just an FYI I have considered the licensing requirements of both states)

Craigslist probably won't ever help you find a clinical type massage job, as many MTs are reluctant to advertise anything there due to non-legitimate ads there. Try refining the google search, and rather than just searching for massage employment, find out where to GET the type of massage you want to give. I'd think an area as large as Greenville would have plenty of work, and a 4-5 hour round trip commute would get very old, very quickly, especially without a guarantee of quite a few hours of work each time!

As an employer, I have found that we get the strongest responses from posting job openings on Craigslist. Not always our strongest candidates, but certainly more applications come through CL than from all other position listings combined.

Not sure why legit MTs that won't advertise on CL would respond to job listings on CL, but there ya go... :altsmile:

Very interesting. Hmm...maybe they don't advertise for fear of people thinking the wrong thing. FWIW, I would definitely apply for an MT position I came across on CL provided it was of interest to me.

It's "funny", I just did the same CL search for massage in the jobs section of Hartford's CL and came up with quite a few ads. Hmmm, maybe that's indicative of the MT industry down there. :shock:

Next question: Why do legit MT employers who won't advertise for clients on CL still advertise for employees on CL? Is it just that the sole prop listings are so full of questionable ads, but the rest are fine?

I've totally shied away from CL for *anything* due to the massage listings I'd seen there.

Posting a "help wanted" ad on CL is still free. We got a strong response the first time we tried it and have continued using it successfully. :massage:
