First Client

I just qualified in May and finally have my first client booked soon.

When I was a student we had to get our case studies to sign a form stating that they understood I was a student etc etc.
Does anybody get their new clients to sign anything at all, or is this only necessary for students. Do they need to sign a form that recognises the fact that you cannot claim to cure/diagnose etc?
Also do you have any useful tips for when you first see a new client?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi Gina,
I qualified at the beginning of April this year, and only just seeing clients now. I have a client record card with questions about their health, I go through this with them and record their answers on it, at the bottom of the card I get them to sign it, and also ask them to sign a disclaimer if they have any contra-indications to massage.
When you first see your client try to be as positive as you can, I felt a little nervous when I saw my first client, but as long as you can be freindly and give a smile, dress smartly i.e Tunic etc with your badges on, and have everything you need to hand, youwill be ok, dont worry!
It gets easier as you gain more clients

Hi Gina,

I qualified 14 years ago. Always make sure your consultation card is relevant to the treatment you are offering. Give written after care aswell as verbal and keep a record of both.

Professional, smart, smile and most of all approachable.

Your consultation sheets, client histories etc are medico legal documents (I think that's the right term). When I was training we were told to get every new client to sign a disclaimer statement on the sheet where we've taken their history down, to say that we have discussed potential contrainidications and that they consent to have a treatment with you. It's a good habit to get into because you are entering into a relationship with that person and it's a little bit like a contract. You agree to give them a service and they acknowledge that they are fit to receive it and are willing to pay for it.

A hint - above the bit where my clients sign the disclaimer statement I have typed in big bold letters that all information they give me is treated in confidence. I think it reassures clients that you are a serious and discreet professional.

I always do a consultation with new and existing clients (existing clients just to check no changes from last treatment) and I get their signature every time. We did quite a bit about consultation forms in college and about the importance of them. Ideally I would have thought you need to do them for your own peace of mind and for your own protection (its amazing what some clients 'forget' to tell you about[&:])
