I've taken this from the decorating thread...

What I really want to do is get rid of the carpet...oil stains are not cute.

I have a large carpet piece under my table that sticks out about 2ft on all sides to protect my carpet - but that carpet piece is getting rather oil stain spotted now and should be replaced.

So oil stains are a problem for light carpets, and no need to discuss a body scrub that flies everywhere

What are the problems you've encountered with timber, laminate, tile, matting, any other carpet problems, rubber, polished concrete, etc?  I've seen a rubber that goes over the floor and up the walls a few inches that was lovely to work on (slight cushion), very easy to clean, but way out of my budget any everyday flooring options ideas?

I haven't decided on a replacement for the carpet yet, but would like to hear about the good and bad of other options before I get too far down any path.

I have commercial carpeting that has the circular pattern and texture of a Zen garden, done in three colors of yarns, with a contrasting border.  I have never had any problems with oil staining, but my carpet is glued down, wich can be very hard on one's feet and legs.  My boyfriend's treatment room has padded carpet, and it is much more user-friendly.If you have problems with oil staining, you could switch to tile, but the fear there is after the massage, if the client gets up to walk with oil or cream on their feet, it may be very dangerous, especially if it's a ceramic tile. I know that with laminate, if you leave out a wet mop, or let water or other liquid stand for an extended time, it will buckle.  Aside from that, it is easy to care for.  I would not use a porous tile or concrete unless it is sealed.  Oil footprints and spills will never come out, otherwise.

I have industrial carpet in a non-offending dark neutral, BUT... of course I want something else! I am on a big kick right now to improve my business and ALL that I use for it. (just redid my gift certificates & service menu cards & they ROCK).There is an all purpose cleaner I just tried recently that completely wiped out a few oil & lotion spill stains in our room. It came out so fast & I keep trying to find the spots again (even with my ugly flourescent light on! ha), and they are just gone! Its called "Crud Cutter"... sounds like a joke, but its a really great spot cleaner. We got it at Sam's Club, so it might even be available at Walmart Stores.There are some awesome looking bamboo 'carpets' in the Crate n Barrel catalog. I can't afford em now, but I can dream! I would just use it over my wall to wall carpeting; get a size that compliments the dimension of the room &  the table positioning, etc.Jill/Sagetherapist

Spending some time & money with an interior designer can be well worth it to your budget... they often are able to get things us "normal" folks can't even find out exist, and finding solutions that work within your budget is what they are trained to do!

What about carpet tiles?  I saw some of those on HGTV (the home and garden channel).  They're one foot carpet squares that you can lay down in patterns.  When one square gets stained you just replace it.I've nearly killed myself getting off the table at two different spas on tile floors, and I'm supposed to be a professional... :-XKatykangaroo
