Flying with your table?

I see that this has been discussed briefly before, and I just wanted to ask if folks had any more experience to share traveling by air with your table.

Did it cost extra to check it? Did you have any problems?

I checked on it for the last seminar I took. While my airline ticket cost about $200, it was going to cost a minimum of $175 EACH WAY to take my table, as it was both oversize, extra baggage, and overweight.

Needless to say, I didn't take it. Check with whatever airline you are planning to fly, give them the dimensions and weight and see what they say.

If you are visiting family or friends, ask them to check Craig's List for a cheap table. Then they can do what ever they want with it when your gone. It could be less then what it cost to travel with the table or ship it. Cosco or places like that have some inexpensive tables as well. For taking your table to a training, this idea might not help.

I wonder if through a web search you could contact MT's or even a school and explain and ask to rent a table. If someone contacted me, I would lend them my spare table! I would hope that we would all support each other in that way.

With the way airlines treat baggage, I would think twice about it, but I know people do it.

Many of the schools will rent tables and chairs. I know the one in Bonita Springs Fl does.

If you're going to rent tho, make sure you check the equipment. I saw someone who rented a chair recently and didn't do this, not good with essential parts missing!

If you can find a rental table or find a cheap table to purchase and be delivered, go for it! I took mine last time I traveled and it was $150 each way.

Another thought to consider is that if you need your table for a class, there will probably be many local therapists there who have brought their tables. I'm sure you know that already, in most seminars you will be partnering up. Of all the seminars I have been to where I couldn't bring a table there was always someone I could partner up with who had one.

I was involved with this very thing.

A MT from the West Coast was visiting and wanted to massage her grandmother. A few weeks before the visit the called to ask if they could rent a table. They didn't know where else to turn. They turned their plight to a nurse friend and she told them to call me. I have an extra table.

Anyway, I told the mom and daughter they would have to put $50 down on the table as a security deposit. If they returned the table in the same condition, I would give them back the check. The daughter ended up purchasing a bottle of oil and some sea salt spending a total of $20. Not a lot, but it was $20 more than I expected.

The table was returned promptly and all was well.

And yes, I did it... I registered for the 5 day Ortho-massage intensive this month. ;-)

I recently did this: When I registered for a training, I e-mailed the presenter and asked if I needed to bring my table, I am going with another MT and between us we’ll bring one table. Wouldn’t it be nice if the trainers would help us in some way by arranging table rentals or connecting MT’s to make arrangements to partner, ship one table between two MT’s and share the expense of table shipping?

I am new at all of this, it’s my first year as a MT, and I am figuring it all out…this CEU stuff and EVERYTHING!

I have taken a lot of CEU classes & never once brought my table. What I found strange is that many places suggest bringing a table, and then when you arrive, they've provided tables anyway.
