i could help your for shanghai....but not for japan...
i have been to japan and with a local guy and find a soapy massage, but not called soapland...

I will keep watching this thread. Went to Kabukicho last fall with another guy but seems the girls didn't like foreigners. They also pretended they don't understand English. Will go to Tokyo this Nov again on a project and hope will have better luck.

Rarely? I don't know where you have been but a lot of places these days accept foreigners, use this map when your in yoshiwara. It shows all the places that are gaijin friendly
