CRYSTAL FALLS, Mich. (WLUC) A former Iron River massage therapist was back in court Monday morning for the preliminary hearing of the second case against him.
In this case, Joseph Rankin faces one misdemeanor count of obscenity and unauthorized practice, a felony. Rankin surrendered his massage therapy license earlier this year after being accused of sexual contact last year.
A family friend of the Rankins took the stand in court Monday. She testified that in May 2016, the 25-year-old Rankin told her he could still perform massages, but it would have to be done secretly and paid for in cash. She declined at that time but said, shortly after, Rankin did massage her at his place of business, free of charge.
The judge found enough probable cause to have Rankin bound over to trial. He will be arraigned on all charges, including a fourth degree criminal sexual conduct charge and another felony of unauthorized practice, on October 17. The judge will also decide on that day if a second-degree criminal sexual conduct charge should be added.
