"Lunar Massage is looking for motivated, experienced therapists for its new studio in downtown (by the Convention Center) which opens March 12. Lunar Massage provides seated and table massage for clothed clients in an open, screen-divided room for busy professionals and people who aren't comfortable with traditional massage. Lunar seeks to be affordable, accessible massage in the downtown area.

Qualified candidates can perform seated, acupressure, thai, sports, and other therapeutic massage that can be done with the clients clothed."

Although not a new concept, I like the idea. Less overhead, as conventional office/treatment rooms aren't necessary, there is no need for linens and few, if any, lubricants.

If what I've just stated is part of the goal, their wording of "can be done with the clients clothed" is a bit ambiguous. As it is an open, screened area, there should be no option to undress.

Perhaps I am too much of a semanticist, but I would not have put "massage" in the name, either. The types of bodywork listed are not what the average person equates to massage.

I have a couple of clients that prefer to remain fully clothed. It really is kind of cool to challenge myself to work a full hour over clothing, and there is so much you can accomplish that way.

Seems like a neat concept to offer it as a regular thing.

I love that idea. I've always felt that providing fully clothed massage options was a great way to introduce more people to massage and alternative wellness, when they otherwise may not be comfortable with it.

I made it a point to let people know that I offered this type of work and had many surprised yet delighted people express interest, and even a few regular clients bring someone else in to try it for the first time. I hope to continue the practice in my next position.

Definately interesting but I don't think I'd like it. What about contraindications of the skin? How would they go about that?

You have a good point rezod. I always had the client fill out the same intake form as with a "regular" massage, and just as with a swedish massage, it is the clients responsibility to inform the MT of any health conditions. I liken it to working the glutes through underwear; if the client hasn't informed you of anything, like a skin condition in that area, then there isn't much more you can do, right? I suppose it is really up to the MT's comfort in dealing with this type of situation, and up to them if they decide to provide this type of work, or not.

Akasha, you're right. Not much you can do if not informed by the client.

I have unfortunately had the opportunity however to inform clients about things that they were unaware of. Spots that turned out to be nothing, and some that did.

I urge caution when working over the clothes but also understand that to work with a client means to work within their comfort level. Further, some body work is better than none and hopefully these clients will at some point be comfortable enough with their MTs to "get nekkid" on the table.

It's not really my thing, though I've done it in the past. But, if there are people out there wanting to do this type of work, let me know and I'll refer you a client or two if they come walking through my doors.

Most asian modalities are performed fully clothed shiatsu, tui na ect., accupressure can be done fully clothed. Mostly pressure and holding techniques, I really like doing it and have a client every two weeks who gets a two hour session. I do prefer sweedish though.

I prefer styles of bodywork that don't involve getting naked and the results are just as good as western massage, if not better.

I have clients who are completely comfortable with me but choice asian modalities over getting naked because they like it better.

As for skin conditions, I have had clients who scheduled shiatsu BECAUSE of a skin condition. ???

I'm glad to see this... it's way past time that the average person understand that massage (soft tissue manipulation) covers way more ground than a couple familiar modalities.

A lot of what I do is in a sports setting or a physical therapy clinic, out in the open, so I have no private room. Typically I have people in shorts and a t-shirt or tank top and just work like that. I have never had a problem.

well, they have to use massage because it's manipulations of soft tissue according to state definitions. they probably have open screen and clothe massage due to having a headache of actually getting massage business license with the traditional service. this way they may have some less restrictions in getting their permits to operate a massage business.
