Is spent two months relatively recently after a couple years hiatus from Japan. I discovered the gaijin venues have changed in Kobe and Osaka since my first visit, in strange mysterious ways.
I lived in Itayado Kobe as a SHS JET 03-04. I loved Sallys, the Hub was a little cold, but the other places, like soul blood were ok. BiBis (sp?) was great, but there was little English ability of the patrons. Overall, it didnt mater because sallys was so good, always get a few numbers, girls always friendly, sometimes strangers would spoon on the couches until first train came, pulling a girl out of there wasn't too hard. There English ability was pretty good and I felt like I was talking to a "real" Japanese girl, not western caricature. Sam and Daves is Osaka was ok, except for the rapper one.
Fast forward to summer 07, I was doing the NOVA MMC from June to Aug. Sallys is gone. All the sam and Daves are completely rapperfied. There are very few to any gajin men in there. Most of the Japanese women are rapper-ghetto types, with poor English ability and are there with their rapper j-dudes. Fights are often. Women are rude and will actually ignore you. I was there only two months (got out before the NOVA implosion) but the girls I hooked up with in that period were, an older, drunk woman walking down kyobashi station I talked with on the way home from work; a 30yo saleswoman I met in Rome in May; a 30 yo knockout that took me to ClubDC (happening bar). I consider myself lucky to have met her as she was a long-term customer from the days when sam and daves was a gaijin hangout. I also hooked up with an americanized Japanese woman with nampa and a Brazilian woman with nampa, as well. (had a few women in the happening bar, too).
The point I'm making is, all these women were either women I did not meet in a gaijin bar, or were old hands from early 00s.
As a gaijin with poor Japanese skills, I need to pick up girls with English ability.
Where the hell is a good gaijin bar/club to pick up chicks? Sazai, Japanese speakers only. A couple bars I went to were dead. Club pure on Thursday: not many people and the girls I met stood me up later or only got one date [again their English ability was very poor and they were really trying to be what they thought was "hard, street-edged", as opposed to kawai or whatever. The poor English ability reduced me to use a dictionary].
I still saw English teachers around the city. What the hell do they do? The NOVA guys at MMC were older and seemed to have come to be with their j-fiances, so not much help. What's Tokyo like?
I've always loved Kansai, but the lack of an Osaka "metropolis" for ads, lack of "international parties and most importantly, a lack of clubs/bars I can go to to meet non-rapper, English speaking Japanese women, is really making me reconsider.
Is it that there are too many foreigners for too long now? (I doubt this because there will always be j-girls that want to meet foreigners). Was I not kawai enough at 26 vs. 23 (I gained weight (15lbs., but am still fit compared to most gaijin at 6ft2 173lbs).
My guess is that all the gaijin clubs make more money now catering to the rapper underclass Japanese. This has completely shifted their clientele, leaving few traditional nightlife venues for the non-Japanese speaking gaijin.
Should I go to Tokyo this summer instead?
