Gary Tyler has made a name for himself in the world of massage therapy for the past 16 years, and with the opening of Total Touch Therapeutic Massage earlier this year, he has separated his business from the rest.
While Tyler and his staff of five therapists offer a variety of massage types, including sports, deep tissue, couples, and soft touch massages, the wheelchair-accessible clinic's specialty is medical massage.
"I focus on people who have some type of disease or who are in a wheelchair; some that have a disability," Tyler said. He added that he has experience working with clients that have dementia, cancer, Parkinson's disease, individuals who have had joint replacements, lymphatic issues and geriatric issues. "I can help to speed up recovery and ease pain."
The staff is able to give massages to fully-clothed clients, as well as clients in wheelchairs or hospital beds.
Before creating Total Touch, Tyler worked with seniors at community centers in South Windsor and Vernon. He still works with many of his former clients. The South Windsor community center provides transportation to Total Touch for its seniors.
Much of what Tyler has learned has come from real-life experience, he said. He trains each of his staff members personally, assuring clients that they will receive quality work no matter who their therapist is, Tyler said.
"I teach a lot on disease aspect of [massaging] and a lot of massage therapists train that now," Tyler said.
Tyler also has incorporated family into the business. His sister, Diana Brandt, handles the business side of Total Touch, which allows him to focus solely on creating the best massage plans for clients.
"There comes a point in your business where there are only so many hours you can give of yourself and once you become so in demand, you're either turning people away or you have to raise prices, or you have to hire," Brandt explained.
Brandt's daughter also makes herbal creams that Tyler said reduce inflammation and keep skin moisturized. The creams are used during massages.
Clients can also receive on-site visits, and it's not uncommon for Tyler and the staff to go to someone's home or even the emergency room.
"I've done quite a few ERs; people in the ER with a migraine or an injury in a car accident, and worked on them there," Tyler said.
Aside from the business in South Windsor, Tyler and the staff also provide their service at hospitals and rehab centers in Vernon, East Hartford and Rocky Hill.
