Getting a Tax ID

Anyone know how to go about this? I need to be able to buy things wholesale and so many places require a tax ID before they will sell to you.

If you are a sole proprietor your SS# can be used for your tax ID.

In Arizona its called a TPT Number (transaction priveledge tax number). Very easy to obtain; easy to file your monthly obligations online too. It IS extra work though.

what you want to get is a sales tax id number. just to give you a heads up, i think it takes about 6 weeks to receive once you request it. maybe sooner but i think it can take up to that long. and btw, some companies will only ask for your tax id number.

yes superspagirl that's correct! it's a state thing. although, i guess it depends on your state because i think certain states, when you apply for your tax id you'll register to collect sales tax so it's applied for altogether. i think minnesota does this. not sure who else does.

Usually there are two main tax numbers a business applies for:

Sales Tax ID - used when you are a retail business to collect sales tax, or companies that need one to purchase wholesale. Issued at state level.

Federal Tax ID - this is the ID you get when you form a company, and is used to file business taxes and also Federal Unemployment Tax if you have employees.

It is a state thing

Each state calls it something different.

It allows you to buy wholesale tax free, but you have to collect sales tax on any of the products you sell.

HappyBug what do you use your SS# for? Buying products wholesale or filing taxes and on insurnace paperwork? I use my SS for filing insurance forms but am under the understanding that you must have a tax # for buying wholesale.

Okay, that is what I use mine for too. I am talking about being able to buy products from companies wholesale. Some require that you have a tax ID number or business ID.
