getting new dog and introducing to an 11 yr old dog?

my dog is already 11yrs old and he's always been an only child for so long. he's already on a rimadyl for his arthritis. i asked his vets a few months ago abt getting a new dog. and he strongly adviced against it becoz of my dogs age. they mentioned something abt jealousy and that i should have gotten 1 when he was still young like a few months old.
i still cant comprehend why we cant have a new one. i need answer for this now becoz my firend will be out of the country for almost a yr and she wants to leave her dog with me too. btw both dogs are equally spoilt if that helps. and im thinking maybe if the dog will be introduced by another person. like another person will be ocming in to bring the dog instead of me bringing the dog in the house. idk. pls?

I thought of having the new dog introduced by another person so that my baby wont think I'm replacing him or something. he only has a few yrs left of him since he's a big dog. I wouldn't want him to think that he's already rejected becoz he's been sick lately and that's part of the reason why I mentioned that he's on meds already. again thank you thank you..
@Kit_kat: thank you. that's actually my concern. my dog not understanding. and I wouldnt want to neglect the new one as well.
although, i need to add that my dog is not that sick yet to be put to sleep. trust me. we're up to par with his health. he just has occassional pain that gets alliviated by meds.

your dog will not be jealous of you bringing the dog in dogs don't have those kind of human thoughts and feelings
however your dog being old will not understand the other dog getting attention and also will more than likely not accept the other due to territory issues
your dog is old and already ailing and the stress of having another dog bought in at his age will probably affect t him with even more health issues
older dogs will often go into hiding and not eating correctly with the stress and will often end up with many health issues this just isn't fair to your dog
I hate to say this but really you have to good options have your old dog put to sleep if it is ailing and having trouble getting around and get the other dog or wait until your dog does pass
as I said I hate to mention hate first and really don't feel this is really an option if you truly love your dog and it still has a quality of life if you do feel the dog no longer has a quality of life then yes have the dog put down

I feel you shouldn't let another person bring a dog in the house. lol It should be between you the 11yr old and of course the new-by. It will be more intimate for the 11yr old and yourself. But beware some dogs Just don't get along with each other, just like humans. So it all depends on the dogs chemistry. But don't try to force and expect them to get along. Know what to do when they dint get along. As long as you're physically present (in eyesight) the 11yr old shouldn't stress too much.
I have a 1 1/2 yr old pit bull. she is so sweet. but she knows nothing of the world. Because I saved her from neglect. Anywhosles, when we are out and she encounters something that she isn't use to I comfort her let her know that certain things are ok, and she is fine. I can tell when she stress's. but to her my presence can be.
The same with your dog. You can try it but don't expect them to just don't long.
