Giggles.

Hello again,

Just a quick question, do other therapists get clients, who start giggling during massage?

One of my clients last night was very relaxed, and almost on the point of sleep, when I heard her sigh, then giggle, then went quite again, this happened a few times, but she didnt seem to recall "chatting" during the treatment. (I wouldnt want to say anything to her, as she might have got embarrassed).

I presume it was just due to the highly relaxed state she was in. - Must be doing something right after all.

Anyway,
This has happened to me a couple of times during massage, but is more common during 'healing' (although I believe that massage administers 'healing' too) but I've also had clients start crying (a little worrying to say the least) or even tell me all their troubles.

I think its an emotional release and part of a 'healing' process for them - gggling is cool though - more fun than having a client that's sobbing eh!)
& I think you just support them through it but concentrate on making sure that "you do, that vodoo, that you do"

Hello again...
Yep it is normally an emotional release, the client may not even know why they are laughing or crying or even be able to get control of it......all therapists tend to end up "counselling" a lot of there clients as you tend to make them feel warm and secure and also when half naked you must have their trust!!!!

I remember when I was doing my case studies - one of my clients was hysterical with laughter. At the time it totaly freaked me out, as I didn't know if I was doing something wrong or not. Tears were streaming down his face, all he could do was to say that he was enjoying the session (it was his first) and to appologise for all the laughter. The laughter lasted for the entire session!!!

I was that worried I spoke to an aromatherapist friend of mine, who assured me that it was a kind of 'healing crisis/stress relief' thing, and not to worry.

On my clients next visit, he was fine. No laughter, just really enjoyed the treatment. He is the MD of his fathers company and gets very stressed, so I put it down to that.

I've never had anyone laugh so much since, but when emotions are released they can take on many forms - sometimes in a startling way. As long as you can assure your client that it's nothing out of the ordinary and it's a good thing to happen so they don't feel embaressed - that's the most important thing.

It has happened a few times, usually when somebody has made me laugh prior to the treatment and I just can't stop thinking about what they have said. I had to turn it into a coughing fit once to disguise it when one client said something totally serious that I thought was absolutely hilarous.[sm=rollaugh.gif][sm=rollaugh.gif][sm=rollaugh.gif]

Fortunately I havent had a case of the giggles, although I have noticed recently, I seem to be holding my breath, it's almost as if I am concentrating so hard I forget to breathe.

My only confession was a rather hurried last 5 minutes of a treatment, as I was bursting for the loo, and the waterfall music on the CD was not making things any easier.

Cupping sets me off in fits of giggles, hacking, effleurage anything else is fine, soon as you start trying the clippety clop on me I'm a goner. bit of a pain during class.

i know what you mean by that... i remember during the practical exam, its the only way of telling who is where on the routine... luckily i started first and you could almost sense this panic round the room as the others thought, omg! i havent got there yet, i'm going to slow!

Your post was funny Candie - can you give us any examples of what made you laugh so much?! I occasionally get clients in reflexology who find it slightly ticklish at first, or who giggle about having their feet done the first time - am I the only one?

i have had both , tears and laughter

one lady (friend of a friend) came for Reiki and as i welcomed her into the room she burst into tears and cried for 2 hours she was sobbing so hysterically we couldnt start the treatment until she stopped. it made for a very long night and then she put £5 in my donation box. she never did tell me why she was crying I just caught the odd word between sobs and made soothing sounds handed over nearly a whole box of tissues. She was here for 3 hours but as she left she smiled and said she felt so much better !

Another time just as I was closing a Reiki session I was deep in concentration and my client who appeared to be asleep sat bolt upright and laughed her head off (I nearly jumped out of my skin)for about 5 minutes. she said she had been sharing a joke with her mother who had been dead for years and was quite surprised to see me and realise where she was. She was obviously dreaming. we still laugh about it.

people often giggle during massage which I sometimes put down to nerves and I sometimes struggle to hold back the giggles ...........but thats what makes all this so interesting

Janet I would love to share with you but it would be very unprofessional! It was a comment made by a client in a very serious way that I thought was hilarious. Trouble is I am a very visual person so when somebody says something to me I do tend to 'see' it very clearly and this was hilarous though the client didn't realise it. Wish I could tell you but dare not.
