giving a talk

hi all hope everyone is well and happy

just thought id pick your brains, i have been asked to give a talk on reflexology, has anyone done this and are there any tips or advice you can give me, i am still a student, qualify in june, so not very experienced.

How long is the talk? I would recommend that you break it down into bits
when you know time constraints.

1. Introduce yourself to the group and say a bit about how you came to
study reflexology.

2. Talk about the history of reflexology, its ancient roots and more recently - explain about the reflex zones on the feet and hands and how they are massaged during a treatment. Holistic therapy i.e. treats the whole person. Get a poster of the feet and use that to demonstrate some reflex points.

b) Do a demonstration on someone in the room (or take someone with you) show how you use your thumbs, and fingers and warming up techniques - you could pair them up and get them to try it out on each other if you want participation.

c) Give an example of treating certain conditions which reflex zones you would focus on and what you might find on the foot. Talk about the physical appearance of the foot ie. what that might tell you, as well as your findings when you massage a point.

d) Leave time for questions - or decide at the outset if you want questions throughout.

Oh before you start - take some rescue remedy it will settle nerves. Do a little lesson plan with a time plan and method of teaching being used - i.e. talk, group discussion, demonstration - and work out what teaching aids you need i.e. posters - map of foot - etc.

When you plan something well you feel more confident.

Who has asked you to do the talk? This may greatly affect what you discuss in the session. Try to tailor it for their needs best as you can.

Binah gave a good 'plan', and like Gussie says, tailor your presentation for the group. I did something similar to the WI a number of years ago - the younger members of the group (under 60's) were the most reluctant to participate!!! If you encourage them to work on each other, make sure you take a couple of packets of baby wipes (or similar) so that people who want to 'have a go' can clean their feet first.
If possible, offer to leave a gift voucher for a free treatment. Depending on the group, they may have little quizzes at other meetings - the winner would get your voucher. You could always offer the organisers other vouchers with a percentage reduction for people to take away with them. I did this at a talk about 5 years ago, and I still regularly treat 4 of the ladies who were there.
