I'm going to disagree--somewhat.

I agree it's best to bring dollars. When you do bring lots of one's and five's as nobody in TJ has change.

Most ATMs only provide pesos, but if you want pesos you'll get a better rate using an ATM than you will at a casa de cambio. Personally I carry both pesos and dollars. In most of the places mongers frequent you're better off using dollars, but there are exceptions (plus I live in TJ) so I find it best to carry both.

Caution needs to be exercised when using an ATM. Don't every let anybody handle your ATM card, don't let anybody see your PIN, etc. Try to use a ATM connected to a bank and above all look out for rateros.

I use my ATM card frequently, but I prefer using an ATM that isn't in the Zona or places rateros stake out. I've never had any problems using an ATM in Tijuana. (Except the time I forgot and left my card in the ATM. Somebody turned it into the bank, which returned it to me. And, as I said, I use an ATM connected to a bank that isn't located where "low lives" hang out.)

Walk across the border and take a yellow cab to Adelitas. $5. That drops you off in the middle of chica heaven and you can wander around from there. Trying to find a chica in Rosarito Beach will be a waste of time or very expensive. And I doubt there will be any sunshine till next week.

Perfect advice. Most ATMs are ratero hangouts. But there can always be an exception. I never use dollars, and I always buy pesos at the ATM next to AB. However, always cover your card with your hand when using an ATM and ALWAYS cover your PIN. And NEVER EVER let anyone touch your card for ANY reason.

I hope you are spending 3 nights because you have to. TJ is a 1/2 day mongering spot.

My experience is that it is pretty safe. Like others have said, don't get shit faced.

I was just reading the Burt2020's post and it made me laugh a bit. He's right. I cut myself on a sharp corner going up one of Sampsonrico's favorite spots in the callejon. I think people thought I was a drug addict because I always take cheap ass clothes, probably had my hair all messed up because of the chicas, and had my hand wrapped. Yeah so watch out with sharp corners.

Some steps are a bit tricky. Some areas in La Zona are slippery and you could easily twist your ankle. Especially outside AB. I know I have to watch myself when going in and out because it's raised a bit. C'mon who designed it like that?

On one of my recent trips I took very uncomfortable shoes and when I got home I threw them in the trash. It ruined my experience a bit but I fixed the problem. It hurt a bit because they weren't that old. Still I had to do it. So yeah you been warned.

Suggestions.
1) DO NOT GO TO AN ATM! Bring your cash over from the US side.
2) Don't be a cheap ass, take the taxis. There are some places between the Zone and the boarder you don't want to be walking. hell I'm built like an NFL lineman, andI'll be damned if I'm going to walk to the boarder to save $5.
3) Be under control at all times, don't become the drunk gringo..you do not have friends there to cover your back so don't fuck up.

Stick to the main areas and you will be just fine. You're gonna have a great time. and make sure you do get a massage at Aztec at Revo & 2nd.

Tijuana is safe. It's safer wandering around Tijuana alone at night than it is in many US cities.

Observe the same safety cautions you would anywhere in the world. Obey the law, don't do drugs, don't stumble around the streets drink, stay out of dark alleys, etc.

Two cautions:
1. Many sidewalks are in need of repairs. Probably your greatest danger in TJ is tripping and falling.
2. There are lots of deported felons in TJ. Be wary of guys wandering around the streets speaking English well who want to help you. Chances are what they really want is to scam you. Don't stop to talk. (One scam they pull is to work with a dirty cop and they'll claim you were trying to buy drugs, etc.)

Gigant : just use your common sense and don't be stupid. Don't get drunk or do drugs. Don't become a easy target for the shady ladies or waiters. DO NOT go off with a barker or woman into an alley. Stick to the main red light zone areas. Have a great time! You're going to monger for 3 days straight? Damn, I hope your dick doesn't fall off.
