Goiters

Hey all -- I recently worked with a client that has a goiter. I tried to think back to school as to whether that was a contraindication and couldn't recall. I've never encountered this before and was wondering whether or not it is a contraindication, and if so, is it just local or an absolute no-no!

Certainly not a general contraindication, it is basically an indication of problems with the Thyroid gland. and hormone balance problems (much more complicated than this but I will not go into it here)
I cannot imagine why you would work directly on that area on the front of the throat.

Jeff -- thanks for the info. I finished working on her back and had her turn supine so I could do more neck work -- and she says, "oh, by the way, I have a goiter, but it's almost gone." I obviously wasn't working directly on the front of her neck, but was just wondering whether SCM area work (work close to the anterior neck) would have any adverse effects. Thanks again for the reply!

SCM work would be fine, she probably has controlled the goitre with medication such as thyroxin which causes the gland to return towards normal size.
