Googles Adsense

I really can't understand the point of Adsense - does your website get lots of visitors? I also can't understand why you want to include possible competitior sites on your website - there is a competitor filter, and contextual filter, but you've got to keep an eye on it - you never know when someone will start using a pay-per-click option and appear in the results.

But the biggest thing is I tend to look at sites with Google Ads on them and think they're trying to make money however they can, they're not concentrating on their business, they're not serious about their main business. That is totally just my perception, but I take sites without Google Ads more seriously than those with. I'm sure others are either more accepting, ignore ads better than I do, or more gullible and think since it is on your site you are associated with them so they must be good.

I use Google AdWords to advertise my business (relatively inexpensive), I also use Google Analytics (to see who's visiting and how often), and Local Business Center (to promote my website and offer free coupons).

However, I agree with melb that AdSense detracts from the professionalism of your site. If you have a minute, look at my site and then imagine what it would look like with Google ads all over it. Yuck!

When I come across sites plastered with Google Ads I am immediately turned off and, if they're selling something, suspicious of their reputability. AdSense is for blogs and informational sites - not business sites - because the ads detract from your own business.

Got it.
Just thought of throwing up relevant sites while it is just sitting there.
The website does me no good as I have moved far away. The website has newjersey in its URL, no good to me here.

that actually makes a world of difference - the website is not used for your business, you can put whatever you like up there and even make it look like you are being helpful - "sorry, we're no longer operating in the area but these Google Ads may help you find someone else."

You've now experienced the problem with location specific URL or business names - they're not much use if you move from the location.

How much longer have you got the hosting paid up for? It may also be worth considering putting "if you want this domain name, let me know", someone might make use of a url that is well out of the Google sandbox.

Are you setting up a new webstite with a new URL? The other option would be to do a 301 redirect in the .htaccess file to your new URL - it will help get the new site out of the sandbox faster (which would mean AdSense couldn't be used)

Thanks, great ideas. I knew about the redirect but who in Myrtle Beach would be searching newjersey for massage?
Anyhow, I thought with Adsense I could tailor the ads I wanted.....for example I have no problem with biofreeze, MW, amta etc to show up but what did show up was Moniques massage and some others.
As far as competition, there is an editing tool(which doesnt seem to work bec ause Monique still shows up).
I was thinking of maybe starting a blog for students and MTS? Who knows, it's jsut sitting there unil 2007/8.
It isn't expensive as I put content up.

I think a blog or space where you could put links to articles you feel that might be beneficial could be a great idea Robyn.
You paid for it, might as well use it for something!

The redirect is more for Google to realise they already know you.
If your newjersey site did OK through Google, it means google liked you, rather than start up a whole new relationship with google with a new website, redirecting the old site means google goes "oh, they've moved URL, I know who they are, I still like them".
With a new URL with no redirect to it google thinks "don't know them, I'm not going to like them until they've been hanging around for a while (usually about 9months)" This is the Google sandbox effect - it is all like a kids playground, poor google used to list everyone, then they realised lots of new sites were just some fly by night operation to sell viagra and so google won't list them until they think they're going to be a round long enough to be worth listing.

I am new to all of this. I get about 40-50 hits a week, good for me I think... Anyway, can you choose what goes up or how many goes up? I was think massage related stuff (products and the like) not competators per se.
