Question Got threatened by a Chinese man. They have my phone number. What can they do?

Backed out of meeting with an independent provider because they wanted payment in giftcards. Then they told me they have my phone number and that they will use it to get me. What should I do?

Nothing. I assume even if you used your real number you have your caller ID blocked so they don’t know who you are or where you live.

Don’t answer. They are trying to scare you. Ignore them and they’ll stop. If they don’t then go to the cops.

Asking for gift cards is typical scam material, as is threatening unless you pay up. If you DO pay the threats will escalate, not stop because now they know they’ve got a mark.

They will never escalate beyond just simple threats because they are overseas and have no means of acting on it, nor is it productive for them to do so. They are in the business of scamming people to earn money, once it’s clear there is no more money to be earned they move on to the next mark.

These people don’t even live in the country. Block and move on.

This is a common scam that has become popular over the past year or so. You message a girl on LL but don't book for whatever reason. Then someone messages you back and threatens you for "wasting time" or "costing money", which makes no sense because you never actually booked. They usually pretend to be Mexican/Colombian cartel, but this Chinese Mafia thing is a new angle.

Normally I would say just ignore it, but you used your real phone number. Your best bet is still to just ignore them and hope they're too lazy to pursue you. However if googling your number tells them where to find you, you might be in a bit of actual trouble.

That's a very common method to blackmail. Just ignore it. In many cases, these bad guys who threatening you are not in Canada.
