I like the NEW YORK BAR and always enjoy spending a few hours there, drinking a couple of Imperials and talking to the other gringos. However, you would think a place called "The New York Bar," which caters to gringos, would play American music on the radio, and not the Spanish music that the bartenders like. I know that a lot of other gringos feel the same way about this....because they told me so. Just last week, when I was in the bar, several gringos got up and left, because the bartender had the Spanish music blaring away so loud, you couldn't hear yourself think. It is not for a lack of a quality radio station in Costa Rica that plays classic American songs; indeed, RADIO 99.5 [DOS] is a great station in Costa Rica....even broadcasting in English, and playing those classic American hits that us 50somethings grew up with.

This is my personal opinion...and everyone else is certainly entitled to their own.

By the way.....I like DOS 99.5 so much, that I stream it online in the U.S.

Idea:

Maybe you could load up your iPod with a couple of hundred of your favorite tunes in English. Then you could just stick in the earbuds whenever you are in the NY bar and wouldn't have to be concerned about experiencing another culture, music, or language. Then you could peacefully wonder without being bothered why the hell you are in a foreign country anyway. This will work in all countries outside the USA. After all, you can learn something new every day if you're not careful.

Just a suggestion.

Head on over to the SL, Bill has a great duo from the States playing live .............all good stuff, Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Eagles and lots more. I understand the schedule for now is Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday evenings. Pardon me, but the New York Bar is a dump. No maybe it's the fuglies that hang out in there! OK, somebody pipe in, one time you found a hottie there. :

We all like what we like. I'm all for experiencing different cultures, but that doesn't mean I enjoy every facet of them. Sometimes you're just in the mood for rock, right? I absolutely adore eastern europe, but I swear the pop radio stations in Kyiv and Moscow are just playing the same annoying tune over and over again. Most bars solve this problem by putting in a jukebox. The bar makes money and you have no ground to stand on if you don't like the music.

It does seem odd that a gringo bar doesn't play gringo music. When I was tending bar at the beach many years ago, we could only play Buffet and Buffet-esque music over the speakers. It gets old, but if that's your bar theme you have to stick with it.

Don't give me that. I have traveled plenty and have gone out of my way to absorb local culture. I spent two afternoons in Munich trying to find some live zither music. I even bought a zither in Budapest. I would actually rather listen to Samba than Creedence or hear Sweet Home Alabama again. I have lived in San Jose for 5 years and listened to more Cumbia, Bachata, Reggaton, Salsa, Meringue, Musica Romantica, Ranchera, etc. etc. than you can imagine. I was listening to Mexican radio stations back in the 60s. I can actually tell you the difference between any of those styles. I can also tell you that the 'musicians' in the Key Largo are mostly fakers. They sing and play some percussion, but the keyboard is programmed to do the rest.

But to return to topic, the reason the NY Bar plays (bad) Latin music is because the inmates run the asylum. The boss has rules against the girls playing Latin music loud, because he is a gringo and he has a clue what his customers like. A clue at least. But since he prefers not to be on the premises, the girls play what THEY like. These 20-somethings haven't quite reached the level of understanding that if they chase out paying customers, their tips go down. And regardless of musical tastes, or cultural chauvinism, a business is there to serve its customers, not its employees. Or it should be, if it wants to make money. Sue me if I don't like Reggaton. I don't. I won't sit and have it bombard my ears and make me shout to carry on a conversation. I vote with my feet and my wallet. If the boss isn't bothered to pay attention to what's going on in his bar, I don't feel like I am being unreasonable or closed minded by taking my business elsewhere.

It's true. Couple of things worked against me. Two much more hot-lookings guys than me behind the same bar. I looked like I was 16 when I was 21, and the other keepers were typical beach guys -- muscular, tan, etc. Oddly enough, we were pretty good friends -- bros before hos kind of relationship. Also, I was a bit of a sucker back then, getting girls drinks, etc. and not getting anything in return. Once the girls realized they could pretend to like me for free drinks and give nothing in return, the word was out and they told all their friends too. And true to the definition of insanity, I kept doing it anyway, expecting different results.

Lesson learned. Working there was still the most fun I've ever had at work.
