A TTC bus driver accused of assaulting a passenger surrendered to Toronto Police late Tuesday. Const. Wendy Drummond confirmed to the Toronto Sun Wednesday that the Toronto Transit Commission worker has been charged with assault.
The news of the arrest comes the same day the Sun told the story of Isaac Gould, the worker's alleged victim.
Drummond stressed the investigation has been ongoing. Frederick Tulk, 59, of Pickering, is charged with assault. He will appear in court March 17 at 1911 Eglinton Ave. E. at 1 p.m. Tulk said he had no comment when contacted Wednesday. Police allege Gould, 40, and his son were riding the Sheppard East bus on the morning of Jan. 8.
A TTC employee boarded the crowd bus at McCowan Rd., spoke to the driver and then yelled at the passengers to move back, Drummond said. TTC officials said the employee was on duty and on his way to his own bus route.
When the man and son didn't move, "because they couldn't move," the worker yelled at them and then grabbed the man by the shoulder and pushed him into a pole, Drummond said.
Police said video from the security camera on the TTC bus was used in the investigation.
TTC spokesman Brad Ross said Tuesday that the transit authority was aware of the incident and โappropriateโ action has been taken. Reached Wednesday, Ross said he couldn't get into any more detail because the matter was now before the courts.
"This is one individual," Ross said. "That individual will be held accountable for those alleged actions."
The alleged assault against a customer is "not condoned by this organization," Ross stressed. "This is not indicative of how our employees behave," he said."The vast majority (of TTC workers) do an excellent job every day."
