Headache after massage?

I have a client who loves her massage, but later in the day gets a really bad headache with nausea. Any ideas why? She is a personal trainer, 25 years old, and very healthy. She gets massaged every other week.

Sure she's not dehydrated? What time of day is her appointment? Does she eat before or after the session? Just wondering. *shrug*

I agree, too. Also, do you do prolonged work on the SCM or scalenes? That can cause a rebound headache in some people.

She is definitely hydrated. I don't know a person who drinks more water than her!! But I do some work on the scalenes near the end of the massage. I'll try not to do as much next time and see if that helps.

Oddly enough, I had ANOTHER regular client tell me today that she had a headache after my last massage. I'm starting to think I make my clients sick!!!

Maybe you are breaking through to some emotional/energy issues these clients have been harboring and this is how they are manifesting?

My cousin also gets a headaches after every massage by me and others. I have always attributed these to dehydration. She does not drink enough water. Thanks for posting.

Try doing some downward strokes on the neck(occipital to upper trapz) to finish the massage.

Overhydration is also a possibility. Drinking TOO much water can make people sick as well. But if its not hydration, I'd definitely go for a lot of flushing on every area worked and if doing a lot of work on the neck, maybe an ice pack for a couple minutes right after the flushing. Also, from my own experience, if I lay prone for more than 15-20 minutes I get up with a headache. Maybe try sidelying?
