HELP!!! I have contact dermatitis from the biotone lotion!!!

I recently started having problems with my hands...itching, burning, peeling, cracking and bleeding..I have had to stop working for awhile as I was told it was contact dermatitis. I am not sure what the ingredient in Biotone that has caused it..has anyone else had a problem and can you recommend a lotion, creme that is safe???? Please help..Im going crazy!!! :?

Well, in my experience, there is no "safe" product for everyone. You just have to discover what YOU react to. The safest route to go is to use single ingredient products. Then you know for sure what you react to, if it causes a problem, and if it doesn't, it is one you can rely on. If you find several that are good, you can look for a combo of those ingredients or mix it yourself.

I sympathize. Contaqct dermatitis is a real pain!!

I sympathize too! Biotone was the start of what ppl told me was the worst case of eczema/dermatitis they'd ever seen, and even after I stopped using it, it went on to last for 2 years. I became sensitive to everything from excessive heat to even TAP water. To get over it, I had to completely alter my diet and drink a TON of water daily. Lymphatic massage also helped. As a result, I use only pure jojoba oil. I have to gently decline any client who requires cream or gel, though I haven't had very many of those. I wish you luck! Beating this can be done. First, stop using the aggravating product and go with completely pure oil. Second, drink a ton of water. Third, don't give up! Just when it was looking hopeless, I was able to completely clear mine up without having to see a dermatologist or use any immune system-destroying steroid creams or pills. Good luck!

change over to jojoba - it's a plant wax rather than an oil, more expensive than oil. If you do your own laundry, the extra you pay for the jojoba will be evened out by not having to use all the additional laundry products to get oil out (since jojoba is almost the same composition as the skin's own sebum it is washed out easily by normal laundry detergent), if you pay for a laundry service they won't give you a discount for using jojoba

Look at your personal care items too (shampoo/conditioner/soap/etc) and your laundry detergent, change over to 'mild', 'non-allergenic', etc. You want to cut down on as many possible causes as possible, doesn't matter if you've been using the same shampoo for 20 years, if you become sensitive to something else, it can often trigger off sensitivities to something you've been using for ages.

I wanted to toss out another idea about your hands. I had an issue with my hands and still do if I use anit-bacterial soaps such as Dial or anything is public restrooms. I went to the allergist and used all the creams perscribed but none of them worked. I quit using the those particular products and my hands cleared up. I carry my own soap with me and use hand-sanitizers if I am out. Just a thought. I use Biotone products and have not had any problems.

I have the same problem. Most hand soaps (and especially those commercial grade ones in public restrooms) just eat my hands up. About 10yrs ago I also came down with "contact dermatitis", went to the dermatologist and tried many, many things but once I found out that the problem was soap and started carrying my own soap or santizer, I haven't had any problems since. I also use Biotone and have had no problems with it but I do know a few therapists who had to quit using it (at least temporarily) because of problems. As someone stated above, it's possible to develop a sensativity to almost anything.

My hands dont react, but my forarms do. It comes and goes. I cannot track down what is irritating my skin. I THINK it is the liquid soap, but I am not sure. The one constant is my soap, I have used the same kind for the past 4 months. I switched soaps because I was having an reaction. When I switched soaps, the problem went away. It comes and goes, come and goes, and comes and goes. When I think I have a reaction to an oil I wont use it for a while, but then when I do nothing happens. :roll: Its very hard to track. I use jojoba and have a lot of different scents.

What liquid soaps do those who are sensitive use?? Is it available in a larger quantity such as a gallon?

I haven't personally had a reaction with Biotone products, but I haven't used them in a few years. I like to keep the products I use as simple as possible (generally a single-ingredient) just because there are so many people out there with allergies or sensitivities to different things. I use jojoba for that reason, and like melb said, it washes out of sheets really well. That combined with the fact that I use a lot less than I did of other oils or creams more than evens out the cost.
That said, most soaps are murder on my hands. I've yet to find a liquid one that doesn't dry out my skin. Olive oil soap is fine, and I found an excellent goat milk and olive soap at my local farmers' market that keeps my skin soft. Alas, these only come in bars, not liquids, so not convenient for everybody and everywhere.

You can possibly melt down your bar soaps (shaved or diced first), add water and make it into liquid soap. I do this with glycerin soap so that I can carry my own liquid wherever I go and not have to worry about reacting.

Do you use your forearms a lot when you massage? I do, and I have found that when I have about 15-20 massages over the span of 3 days, I get what I describe as "sheet burn" on my forearms.
When this first started happening, I though I was reacting to something, it looks and feels like dermatitis. But I came to figure out, that for me, it's an abrasion, like a mild rug burn. It is more pronounced if I have more male/hairy clients, and/or when I'm working at the spa where the sheets are scratchier.
Could that be it?

Yes! I do use my forearms alot!

This past winter I had a few clients comment on my forearms, said they looked sun burned. I never thought of it being from friction! I mean... I do use oil!! :

When this started, I would put on Gold Bond Ultimate Cream AND a cortizone cream. But I have found just using th gold bond usually keeps my skin in check.

I dont know if it matters much, but I have a very fair complexion.

w/ regard to biotone cream ---- I absolutely forbid anyone to use it on me because of the problems it causes my body - rashes, etc.

Unless the formulation has changed considerably since last I looked at the label, the cream has some canola oil in it......... canola [rapeseed] has a 1% toxicity and can cause reactions in individuals..........

Thanks for that Anastasia... do you have any more info? As far as I'm concerned, canola oil is just poison in any form and should be banned.

The OP, or anyone who's had trouble with reactions to ingredients, might try working with a homeopath who can make custom remedies out of whatever's irritating you. I remember reading about someone who worked with essential oils a lot, got sensitized to several of them, and was able to find relief with a homeopath.

I developed a reaction to Biotone Dual Purpose cream in school. In a class of 12 people, 2 of us struggled with itching, peeling, burning hands. It was somewhat insidious.....came on slowly...but once it got rolling (3-4 weeks into the massages) it was difficult to get rid of. Once I stopped using the product it took another 2 weeks for the flare-ups to abate.

The fellow who runs the school store confided in me that they have had several complaints about Biotone (Dual Purpose, in particular). He said the "PH is 'off' for our skin" and recommended other products (which have worked fine for me).
FWIW the clinic supervisor also had problems with it and wouldn't let anyone use it on her.

Nowadays, I prefer an oil...but when a cream is necessary I go with another brand.

Hi there...
Well, he recommended Biotone NutriNaturals. Keep in mind, this was/is a "Biotone School". Of course he'd recommend their products I purchased a jar of Herbal Select (is that what it's called?? I can't remember) and it seemed like a good choice at the time. NIce scent, too.
Like I said earlier, the burning, itching subsided within a few weeks of discontinuing the Dual Purpose. I should also mention that I switched to a skin grade silicone lubricant for the remainder of clinic. I don't use it anymore because it was ridiculously expensive, but it was recommended to me by someone who has had chronic issues with contact dermititis.

Now that I've finished school and have been working, I have had to return to Dual Purpose a couple of times when I have run out of my "other stuff". Once, I used it for about a week........bingo.......the rash returned. ANother time, I used it once or twice with no problem. (I know, I know...why did I use it again?? I'm ASKING for trouble).

All that said, I have been rotating between a few different brands...Therapro (not crazy about the consistency), Lotus Touch and Santa Barbara.
I am a big fan of Soothing Touch Oriental Blend oil (smells sooooo yummy). For those occasions when a cream is preferred, I"ll use one of the above.
