Help me to avoid bogus training!

Hi,

I am a Reflexologist and I really want to train in Indian Head massage, as I think it is an incredible therapy.

I am a bit gullible and have been known in the past to be conned into paying huge amounts of money for bogus training. Can anyone out there guide me to a properly accredited course? I am in the Edinburgh area. And/or can anyone answer the following questions:

What sort of price should I expect to pay?
How many hours should the course be and what should it cover?
Which proffesional body should it be accredited by?

Hi Melissa,

Why don't you look at you local further education colleges in Edinburgh who will probably run courses in IHM. Many colleges run VTCT courses which are internationally recognised and accredited with most bodies including the most common FHT, GHT etc.
Have a look at the VTCT website as they have a list of colleges that run their courses in your area.

If you are looking for a short course and are able to travel I can thoroughly recommend doing a course with Liz Napier in Kirkcaldy. The IHM course is 1 day and is accredited with GHT amongst others and costs £115.

Although I did my IHM elsewhere, I did the Thai Foot Massage course with her and thoroughly enjoyed it, and learned alot although it was only 1 day. It was also very relaxed and friendly. Her website is [link=http://www.delicatetouch.co.uk]www.delicatetouch.co.uk[/link].

Yes, before you pay for any training, make sure the course is accredited with a governing or awarding body, i.e VTCT, ITEC, CThA, City & Guilds etc etc. I know exactly how you feel, however - before I did my fabulous VTCT massage therapy course with a local accredited college, I stupidly believed some hyped up sales pitch given to me by BSY, and paid out a very large amount of money for courses that are absolutely useless to me now, as they are not recognised by ANY governing or awarding body, and so I cannot get professional insurance or practice using the "skills" I learnt with them!! Doh!!

if you are willing to travel, Helen Mcguiness in Southampton teaches IHM over a weekend. She writes all the NVQ books that the colleges use. You could fly down.
(I trained with her many years ago and it is a fantastic routine).

also Ellisons in Coventry do a course.

If you go to a further ed college you will probably take 10 weeks to train and receive a VTCT certificate.

before you sign up to any course, ring your insurance company up with the name of the place you will study and the exact wording of your qualification. they can check their database and give you an instant answer if they will cover you for that course.
