Help violin string crossing for a Newbie?

I was wondering if anyone had any tips to help me not to hit other strings when playing. This happens a lot with my A and E strings. I know PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE, but any advice helps. Also, my violin's string can sometimes let out this GOD AWFUL screech/scratch sound...any thoughts? (I got my student violin cheaply, so I suspect it has steel strings could this be the cause and I just need better strings?) Also, the Rosin I have leaves an awful build up on my strings...crappy rosin?
