Help with unwanted noise!

I just comitted to a treatment room in the back of a salon. It is great except there is are a couple buildings nearby with big airconditioning units so there is this insesint 60cycle hum when ever i open the windows. Any suggestions besides keeping the windows closed would be appreciated. I know there are some white noise generators out there. Are there any good ones? do they work?Thank you.

My therapist works for a chiropractor and you can hear everything through the door.  What she does to help is in addition to the regular music, she has a white noise machine by the door.  This machine in particular also plays waves, birds, rain, ect.  You can change the sounds.  She always plays waves.  It definetly helps to cover some of the office noise.  I also own the same noise machine.  I got it from Brookstone a few years back and paid about $50. I looked at the site and seems they have changed things since.  The type that I have is now for baby, with sounds like car ride and heartbeat.  There is a new one with waves ect, runs $100.  But, there was one like I have for auction on Ebay.Hope this helps.

get a water fountain.  this has helped me tremedously at a couple of different massage locations.  make sure you get one that you can control the flow of the water and not one that just "trickles".  i posted the link of the one i have somewhere else on this board.  let me see if i can find the link... here it is at bed, bath and beyond   http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=13069956i love this fountain.  it does make quite a big difference in my office.  also, what is the reason you want the windows open?  depending on your answer, you could hang some fabric over the open window.  this should allow some fresh air to come in but also muffle a bit of the noise.  also keep in mind, once the client is on the table, they hear a lot less then what we hear.  if the noise outside is constant, it may not even be a big deal.

I've found the cheapest, quickest and most inexpensive way to dull external noise is some type of white noise machine like a simple $10 fan or, the fan with no heat from your heater if it has this function.

Keep the fan in a closet if that helps muffle it and has less draft on client.

I am still trying to come up with a more permanent solution which for me requires second walls or fireproof soundproofing material in a design I like.

There is a lot of soundproof - fireproof material on the market. Try google or froogle.

I guess the main thing is to incorpoate it in a way that is pleasing to the eye as well as the ear.
