Help !! Young newbie gardner needs advice on weeds?

story is i bought a house which was my mams aunties unfortunately she is not with us now but she always had an immaculatee lawn.
when i was renovating the house the garden did not get a look in but the time came to give it its first cut which was a nightmare as it was about 7/8 inches long and it had acquired lots of dandelionss so i cut and weed anfeed eded the grass and it seemed to do the trick with the weed seeming to be controlled but i was left with some patches where i think i put to much of the weed n feed and it burnt it but any way i done that in may and kept cutting it literallly cut it every week keeping it neat and short but lately the weather has been crazy loads and loads of rain along with loads and loads of sun so the grass has shot up in 2 weeks obviously a cant cut in the pouring rain and there just seems to be a hell of a lot of weeds.i no now due to reasearch not to let them spout and go yellow and seed but what a need to know is do i weed and feed again or just keep cutting it and use aftercut conditioner or do i try some sort of spot ytreatment ??? thanks for any help in advance
