High Blood Pressure

I had a client today who had high blood pressure for the last 14 years and is on Beta blockers. She is also on a diet too which she started on Jan 1. Iasked her if she had consulted her doctor before she had embarked on this new diet to which she replied yes. I also asked her if her blood pressure had been stable for a year to which she said yes. I went ahead with the treatment and surprise surprise, her kidney reflexex were painful. I was taught that if the blood pressure was stable then it is OK to treat. I wondered what anyone elses views were onthis?

Hello, is there anybody out there!! Is anyone going to reply to my thread. It may seem daft to some, but as a new therapist it is difficult when clients come to you for a treatment and they have contra-indications. At college you didn't treat anyone who had a contra-indicaton at all. I do know that doctors are busy people and its not easy to get signatures from them.
My client got the all clear from her doctor to start the diet but she did not mention that she was going to have Reflexology.
I work in a beauty salon so i dont book in the clients. Maybe, i should ask the receptioniststo ask the clients if they have any contra-indications before they turn up. Thing is will people want to tell the receptionists their medical history - confidentiality and all that!!
I am sorry if this is same old same old, but i would appreciate some advice / guidance from some more experienced therapists

I am not hugely experienced but what I was taught right from the word go is that when treating, you are treating the person, not the condition. In this sense there are few contraindications to the healing power of reflexology. If as you mention, the client is taking medication and is under the care of the GP, all I would check is that they have taken their medication on the day you are treating them, as reflexology can detox and remove some of the drug from their system, thereby leaving them more at risk. If the client has taken their medication, then there should be no problem in treating.

I would not view high BP as a contra if it was being managed in consultation with the person's GP, and meds had stabilised their BP. You could provide the receptionist with a mini pre-screen for when she books clients in, something really brief so she isn't on the phone for ages, but just key things you want to check beforehand. It's a good idea on your part I think.

It would not put me off treating the person provided they were being treated by their GP, however I would monitor them to see how the treatment was affecting them. I once had a client who said her BP erred on the higher side at times, however she was not on medication from her GP because it wasn't severe. During the treatment she had a moment of malaise so I sat her up and gave her a glass of water. She didn't know if it was related to her BP, however she asked to continue the treatment and she was fine after that. She never came again so I don't know if she visited her GP to have more checks on her BP. If in doubt as to if you should treat them, you could refer them back to their GP to get permission from the doc
