If you live in HK island take subway to Kowloon tong station.
There you can switch to KCR train to LOHU.
KCR is not light rail. It is regular trains.
LoHu is the best croosing point for visitors.
LoHu crossing is closed between 12 midnight to 6.30 am.
Huanggong border is open 24 hours.
Check out subway in Lohu. It can take you to lot of places cheap.

I've been to China a few times (Beijing/Shanghai) in the last 5 years and usually have a few days stop-over in HK. I haven't travelled from HK to Shenzhen but plan to do this in late October.

At the risk of turning this forum into a visa enquiries page or annoying fellow membes, I'm hoping it can be spelt-out very simply for the uninitiated such as myself!

If I stay on HK Island, do I take the underground/subway to TST East Station (thanks Alc1118), walk/switch to the KCR (light rail?) line, catch the train to the last (LoWu) stop, then walk across the border checkpoint?

Is there another train/bus that then goes-on into Shenzhen or is it really so close from LoWu that one can simply walk?

Thanks to all in advance for your patience. I am trying to get an exact picture of what I will need to do to get into China after I collect my Chinese visa in HK. I have been trying to piece together bits of advice from other forums and didn't think to ask about it here until I saw this thread.

When I got my visa there 2 years ago the normal waiting time is 4 days. You can get it the same day but it cost 2 to 3 times more. I paid $400 HKD for the normal one.

Last train out of Lowu is around 11.30 PM.

But you can sleep at a massage place overnight if you get a three hour massage. You can use the facilities and free food. Time to get out is 10 AM.

The border closes at midnight.
Huangong border is open 24 hours. For this you have to take a taxi to the border which will cost 30 RMB approx. From there you can take a taxi to Hong kong which is expensive or take a bus to mongkok which is about 60 hong kong dollars.

All KCR trains stops at midnight.

You have to be 65 years or older. This is just in HK..on the Star Ferry boat ride from HK Island to TST It is free for seniors

Maybe not to you....but to me it is worth it coz I am a senior and our fare is half. Standing on a crowded train for 45 minutes is very tiring

Trains start running @ ~5:30 AM. I'm planning to go as early as possible after getting breakfast at the hotel. I was thinking of saving a bit on the tix and using the savings to fund the mongering.

Sorry..the last 2 replys are for ktt trains to Guangzhou..On first class to Shenzhen you will get a comfortable seat if the train is not full..otherwise you will have to stand but usually it is less crowded
