Hoarseness after Discectomy -decompression -fusion

It has been almost 3 weeks since the surgery. Everything went very well. I had no pain whatsoever after the surgery. What a relief. However!
One huge problem. My voice never came back. I can't talk on the phone or to my family at all. Nothing comes out. I'd appreciate some responses!
Has anyone had this happen and if so how long did it take for your voice
to come back. My Doctor said it should have been back the day after surgery. He says I am in the one percent who do not get their voice back.
Somehow I just can't leave it at that. Can't imagine never talking again.!

I have had hoarseness since my microdiscectomy op back in november, my voice is good some days but raspy on others, but more good days than bad.
Taking plenty of fluid helps, keeps the vocal chords moist, when they are dry then my voice can be really bad.
It has been better over recent weeks, and i was as bad as you with my voice, so try the fluids method, and if its no better than go back to your GP.

Do you suffer with asthma? I do and take a steroid inhaler which dries out the vocal chords. If you do too, then gargle with salt water after taking the inhaler, this helps.

I am glad your op went well, if you want to have a look, there is another thread called 'discectomy-after the operation'....There are lots of people ready to help, support and encourage people before and after surgery.

Thanks for the information. No, I don't have asthma. I just have this constant feeling that I need to clear my throat but there is nothing ever there. This also
sounds rediculous but I have this kind of a tickle thing giong on with the throat
since the surgery and even water won't make it go away. I'll drink more fluids as
you suggested and see if that helps. Thanks!
