Horribly sick, after a massage?

This morning my friend said his back was very sore. He didn't know why, didn't remember hurting it at any point, but it was hurting him so bad he was sweating.
So he decided to leave work early and get a massage. He had never been for a massage but I got him one for his birthday recently so he thought it would help.
He got the massage at 3, I don't know how long it was, but maybe an hour. When he was done he said it felt good, but he was tired and thought he would go home and take a nap. An hour later he said he was going to puke, and just now (4 hours later) he told me he had never felt this horrible before, has the worst headache he's ever had and is vomiting. I called him and he even sounds horrible, like just talking was an effort for him.
I've done some research and they say this happens to some after a massage, but usually goes away and it never sounds this severe. Has anyone experienced this before, or knows someone who has?
Also, since his back suddenly started hurting is it possible its not related to the massage at all?
I feel horrible and just want to help him.

It may not be related to the massage, he seemed he was getting sick all along

I seriously doubt the massage is related to his sickness. Massage isn't that powerful despite what some people say. It sounds like he was already sick before he went to his appointment (from your description of his pain & sweating). It's just a coincidence and he would have vomited even without the massage.

They may be related or completely independent. Acute back pain could be the result of meningitis for example, a massage may very briefly alleviate the muscle soreness but will do nothing and in fact may worsen a condition like meningitis. Your friend should seek medical attention to rule out anything potentially dangerous. Better safe than sorry.

It's not unusually for people to feel a little "bleh" the day AFTER a massage, not four hours latter. I suspect he has a rather serious infection, and that that might have been causing the back pain - or, they are totally independent of each other.

Mr. E - please read your answer. That doesn't make sense even by your standards.
