Hi Lindy,
I was introduced to hot towel cabinets by doing spa work. In one spa we only used them for towels, and in another spa we used them for hot packs, towels, and keeping product warm.
I wanted to use heat therapy in my practice at home and agonized over what toold to use. I grilled everyone I knew about what they used and what they liked/didn't like about them.
I finally chose to buy a large hot towel cabi, and I use it to heat/and keep warm gel packs. I went with the cabi, because it doesn't use as much electricity as a hydrocollator unit, doesn't make the room humid, and if/when I decide to do body treatments I can use it for hot towels and product, too. The gel packs are inexpensive, they stay warm for a long time, they are good for the freezer, too, and I have found that they last for about a year.
I have been very happy with my decision. It works great, although I do put a damp towel in the bottom of the unit, because the steamy environment heats the gel packs up faster than a dry one. It was TOTALLY worth the appx. $200. My clients very much appreciate the heat, whether I'm using it to soften up some hard muscles before I dig in, or to keep someone's poor cold feet warm. I don't know what I did without it.
