One thing I like and dislike at the same time is some Mexican hotels just have you fill out a page on their web with the days you are coming and they hold your
reservation on that alone and it seems to work. I like it because if you see a better place you rather stay at you can go ahead and stay there without fear the first place where you made your reservation will charge you because you didn't give them a credit card.
But I also heard horror stories from guys that made reservations and when they get there, they either can't find it, or tell you they don't have a reservation for you. Hotel La Villa de Zaragoza http://www.hotellavilla.biz/ is one such hotel that you hear horror stories about with reservations. Hotel Zaragoza is not in the zona, but rather it's off Revolution a rather long walk to the zona, or a short cheap taxi ride if you take Taxi libre. I like this hotel because it's very nice for the price, and love morning room service from the restaurant close by at very cheap prices, and the area isn't as sleazy as the zona, and they have very secure parking, but again a long walk.
Another OK motel outside of the zona that take reservations and honors them without the credit card or they did when I was here is "Hotel America" off Revolution and 4th street a few streets down. When I had my son's car painted I stayed here as it's close by the paint shops, and close to the zona. My friend always use to stay here before he found a new place. It has very good customer service, one of the guys working there at night is Victor, very nice guy speaks English and is helpful. I stayed here on a recommendation from my friend, but didn't find the rooms as nice as the pictures, but they were decent.
