How did you find your therapist?
Well, I actually married him-- long before he ever became a massage therapist.
And the other therapist we both see, I found at our local Chamber of Commerce. Neat story: When Hubby first got his license, I began researching marketing, local MT web sites, etc.. Every time I "googled" one of several different modalities and our location, this one lady's site kept coming up. I decided that I *had* to meet her someday, but I had no clue how to go about doing that. One morning, we were hesitantly at the local Chamber's Friday morning Leads meeting (our first time there, nervous as a couple of cats on a hot tin roof), and when I looked across the room, THERE SHE WAS! I went over and introduced myself to her, told her about my "google experiments" and her web site, and asked her if she'd be willing to take us under her wing and give us some pointers. She was very willing, and we've been good friends ever since. Now, we all trade out massages.
There are other really good MT's in our area; I just haven't had the privilege of getting on their table yet. I was talking with the friend in the above paragraph just the other day about maybe setting up an informal MT-group meeting, maybe once a month, so we can have a way to meet other local MT's, find out what they specialize in, maybe set up some trades, and socialize and network together. I have found that the MT's around here view competition (real or perceived) as "not a good thing", and I'd love to help change that.

Word of mouth - referral. And, I try very hard to always give my clients names of people I know in other parts of town, other areas of the state and other states when possible.
I am very pro-active at referrals! I ask all of my clients who come in, if they are seeing someone else, how they like them, have they seen someone somewhere else, etc. When they say yes and like a therapist I jump on it and try to get the name and number of that therapist to add to my roladex so that I can give out names when I have people that move or travel.
I encourage every therapist out there to do this. It helps all of us!
I've even referred clients to therapists on this forum.
I love this idea, pueppi, and will try to figure out how to set up a system of this quickly! We do get asked for "out of the area" referrals-- for more than just massage-- more often than I would have thought we would.
