How do gender exclusive therapists (just men or just women) handle questions from Clients of why they choose to massage just one gender, whether it's the same or a different gender?Above 1st Question Revised After 1st response from terab.

Are you saying they only PREFER to work on that gender or that they actually ONLY work on that gender?And, to whom are you handling these questions for?  Answers to clients? Friends or Family? Wife/Husband?  Colleague's? I guess my initial response would be answer honestly why you prefer to/only work on that particular gender.Can't go wrong with the truth.

There are a few salons around here that only cut men's hair, as well as gyms that only allow women to come in. While I've never asked them why they only take certain gender clients, I imagine because it either makes them different, easier to target market, or simply that's just who they feel comfortable with. I'm not sure what you'd tell a client, you may just want to stick with "that's who I connect with and feel comfortable working on."

Not sure why the question?The reason I think would be differnet for every therapsit, but I just tell those who ask my reason, and nobody has ever given my any problems

Randi,So, I'm curious......what is your reason?  What gender do you work on exclusively, and why?I can think of a gazillion reasons why therapists would prefer to work only on certain genders.  I work on both and look forward to the different issues, attitudes, etc. of both.  Before I became a therapist and didn't know much about it, I assumed that a woman therapist would only want to work on women to avoid sexual advances.  What silly thinking......certainly women can make advances on women for one thing.  There are, of course, many issues exclusive to women that these therapists might feel most fulfilled helping.  The best thing to do is be honest.  Unless of course, you are male therapist who is working exclusively on women so you can make sexual advances (or vice versa with the genders).  Obviously, it wouldn't be good to be honest there and probably isn't a good idea to even be in the business!  I'm seriously doubting that is your reason for working on only one gender though.Okay, I'm beginning to babble.  Still interested in knowing what gender and why.  I'd be just as interested if you worked exclusively on the elderly or the infirmed or babies.

just recently i was in tampa florida and saw an establishment that is geared to male clients only called 'the difference'. (i think)it is a complete day spa with salon/nail/spa services, staffed by females only.i would not want to massage males all day long. i've found, once you are known to be proficient in deep work, you start getting all these huge men, one after another.thanks but no thanks.i like the mix of genders.

Speaking of gender, do you have clients that have preference for male over female therapist because they think that women can't give a deep tissue as well as a man? :By the way guys therapist, good quality linens are So important. I think its inappropriate to have see thru linens when you have a female client on your table. Just something I noticed recently.

: I think this applies to more than just male therapists...

Anyway, we do have a thread about gender discrimination / preference somewhere lying about. I'll sum it up briefly; yes, some do think males give a deeper massage, and yes, some think all male MT's are perverts. For some reason people think because you touch them, you want to have sex with them. *shrug*
